Driving to the Harvest Moon

5 vibrant events and locations to truly experience autumn

Though eastern states like Maine, North Carolina, and Virginia are well known for their fall foliage and festivals, some of us, including this author, may not yet be fit for the colder weather nor have the time for a trip to the coast. Luckily, east-coasters aren’t the only ones willing and able to celebrate the season, and there are plenty of options near and far, much warmer and accessible to Texans.

Mountain Music Festival

Embark on arguably one of the most scenic drives in the nation for fall foliage to Eureka Springs, AR for its annual Harvest Moon Festival - a five-day music event tucked away in the stunning colors of the Ozark Mountain range. Though the small town may only be a few switch-back roads, it’s full of character and charm especially this season and is well worth the short road trip. Stay in the notoriously haunted Crescent hotel for the full October experience.

Munich or Muenster?

Feel like you’ve left the country less than an hour away at Muenster’s annual Oktoberfest. Embrace the German culture by simply enjoying a pretzel or bratwurst followed by some beer or fully immerse yourself by competing in the Stein Hoist or eating contest. Either way, it’s hard not to have a good time surrounded by friends and family participating in one of the world’s longest and largest celebrations just down the road.

All Things Forestry

For a truly unique celebration of fall, head north to Wright City, Oklahoma just outside of Beavers Bend State Park for the town’s annual Lumberjax Festival. With a lineup filled with axe throwing, a Mr. & Mrs. Lumberjax Pageant, crafts, local art, and more, this lesser-known festival will surely intrigue all in attendance. End the day stargazing by a campfire at a rental cabin nearby.

Picture Perfect Pumpkins

Though there are many pumpkin patches in the area, it’s hard to argue that any are greater than Autumn at the Dallas Arboretum. With over 100,000 squash and gourds and thousands more fall plants throughout the garden, the festival is renowned for being one of the best in the nation. This year’s theme “Texas Town” takes visitors through Texas History.

Colorful Canyon

Though the sight of the red rocks in Sedona at any time of year is hard to beat, the lesser-known Oak Creek Canyon may steal the show as the leaves change for Autumn in Arizona. Take the scenic drive to experience the full hues of fall and drive up to Slide Rock State Park for its annual Fall Festival at a historic apple orchard or take a hike to fully enjoy the breathtaking views of the city.

Riverside and Rowdy

Perhaps one of Texas’ largest fall celebrations, Wurstfest in New Braunfels is the event of the season. With live music, carnival rides, games, dancing, and Bavarian-styleBavarian style food and entertainment, the festival is fit for all ages and is sure to impress each participant. Grab your Dirndl or Lederhosen and head south for the 10-day event packed with German festivities!

There is no shortage of fun to be had this fall, so be sure to take in the gorgeous scenery around us before it’s time to bundle up indoors!
