Durango is a community that looks out for one another. During this season, many opportunities are available to give back to those in need. Here, we highlight three local causes you can support in the spirit of giving. From La Plata County's homeless animals to children in need of a bit of holiday magic to a community staple providing priceless support to individuals with disabilities, many will benefit from your generosity and care.
La Plata County Humane Society
LPCHS cares for around 3,000 animals annually. With support from the community, they can provide life-saving programs that contribute to reducing pet overpopulation and surrendered or unwanted animals.
LPCHS will have Christmas trees throughout Durango this holiday season with ornaments containing a wish list item for the shelter. Select as many ornaments as you like, and help the homeless animals of La Plata County. For more information on donating, visit https://lpchumanesociety.org/.
Stuff the Truck and Holly Jolly Toy Drive
Hutton Broadcasting, Sky Ute Casino, and Tru West Auto are partnering for Stuff the Truck, a toy drive benefiting the La Plata Family Centers Coalition on Saturday, December 2nd, at Walmart! 92.9 The Point and 99X will broadcast the event live from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
All new, unwrapped toys collected during the toy drive will stay local and go to the family center for their Holly Jolly Toy Drive. For more information and to donate directly to the Holly Jolly Toy Drive, visit www.lpfcc.org/toydrive/ or call (970) 385-4747.
The Festival of Trees & Wreaths
Benefiting Community Connections, this magical holiday tradition celebrates its 20th year in Durango and 4th in Cortez.
The Festival of Trees and Wreaths will bring you into the holiday spirit. This family-friendly event is free to the public and walks you through a magical holiday scene of whimsical trees and wreaths decorated by community sponsors. Bid on unique gifts and decorations, and vote for your favorite tree and wreath to support Community Connections' mission to assist people with disabilities in leading healthy and fulfilling lives in our community. View in person at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum from December 1st - 10th, from noon to 5 pm.
