Easy Roadtrip From St. Louis

Beautiful Breckenridge

With more uncertainties in the travel world this year, a road trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, is a convenient, beautiful and easy option on which to rely. With just one highway between St. Louis and Breck, visitors are one road away from gorgeous scenery, fresh air and activities galore. Although I have three visits under my belt, I can’t wait to go back again, as the area lends so much to explore and enjoy. Don’t worry about being a skiing pro, I've always visited in the summer months for hiking as a way to escape the humidity in Missouri. Summer offers options, such as scenic gondola rides, horseback riding, fly fishing and rafting. The best part about road tripping is taking four-legged friends! Many of the lodging options in Breckenridge are dog-friendly and the town itself is full of dogs in tow. If your dog likes to hike, take them along for a scenic adventure or leash them up for a stroll down Main Street for shopping and dining. Pack a schedule full with sightseeing and mountain views, or sit back and relax at a spot with a hot tub to unplug from all things digital. The best item to pack? An iPhone stand for a cellphone with a bluetooth remote -- you'll get the best nature selfies this way.

Here are some helpful tips for a smooth ride out:

  • Break up the long drive with a stop in Hays, Kansas, situated right approximately halfway and offering newer hotel options for a good night’s sleep.
  • Even with plenty of vehicular space, a weather-proof car top carrier can help make the ride more comfortable for everyone, giving dogs more space in the back to stretch out.
  • For peaceful breaks, look for state parks to stop for a quick walk and a healthy picnic lunch.
