Eating Fresh and Local

Chef Chris Flahaven of PRIME Farm to Table on eating fresh

Eating fresh and local can sound like a hurdle, but Chef Chris breaks it down into bite-sized pieces. Local fresh food not only has many health benefits but tastes different and helps yourself and your community, take it from a chef.

What is the importance of eating local food? Are there health benefits?

  • There are many benefits to buying locally grown foods. Buying local can help create a healthy community, strengthen our regional economy, produce less pollution and lower our carbon footprint. Local food is also very fresh and tastes better.

What is the importance of eating fresh food? Are there health benefits?

  • Local produce sold at your farmers' market is picked or harvested a day or two before the morning of the market. The freshest ingredients produce the best-tasting dishes. Fruit and vegetables lose nutrients in transportation and by sitting on the shelves.

What farms or businesses do you recommend in the area?

  • Your seasonal farmers' markets are the best route to try new foods, local cheese and artisan breads. Or bring the farmers market to your house and join a Co-op.  Dallas Co-op connects you with the same farmers we’re working with. For stores, H.E.B, Central Market, Sprouts, and Whole Foods are the best. Even the local grocery stores are catching on. Look for the local Texas symbol and your organic signs.
