Everything In Its Place

Learn the do’s and don’ts of a perfect formal place setting from the experts at Manor House in Mason.

Whether you’re preparing for holiday entertaining or a family celebration, don’t forget place settings! While formal place settings can take a little extra time, they are the perfect way to make a meal feel special and memorable. For insight into creating elegant, on-trend place settings, we worked with the experts at Manor House. They know a thing or two about creating an impression at the table and beyond, hosting around 500 events per year, from fundraisers to weddings and corporate gatherings.

At Manor House, the typical elements for a formal place setting are a plate charger, plates, napkin, three forks, one knife, one spoon and two goblets (for water and wine). They work closely with their clients and Primetime Event Rentals to create the perfect look for the overall table.

“We want our clients to know all the options available to them,” says Shannon Wullenweber, sales manager at Manor House. “It starts with colored table linens and napkins, and then overlays or runners. Next, the options for plate chargers, specialty stemware and fine china, if they wish to explore looks beyond our (provided) beautiful white china and gold/silver utensils and napkin rings.”

Do’s and Don’ts

DO: Infuse your personality in the tablescape. More is better when it comes to the extras you add to the table. “Candles everywhere and of course flowers! Lots of flowers,” says Shannon.

DO: Mix and match China and stemware, but understand there has to be harmony and rhythm to the overall look.

DO: Utilize each of the elements on the table to add interest. Plate chargers and napkins are a great way to add a pop of color and unify the look of the table.

DON’T: Leave the table bare if it’s a dinner party. Even if you keep it simple, the table should be set before guests arrive.

DON’T: Neglect the importance of planned seating. “Unique place cards are always a nice touch,” adds Shannon.

DON’T: Be afraid to change it up from one event to the next and try new trends like knot folded napkins or bamboo plate chargers.
