This summer is the perfect time to be outside and begin exploring the great outdoors, but that doesn't mean you have to travel far. Fayetteville and the greater Northwest Arkansas area are the perfect places to discover new scenic trails, local parks, and outdoor adventures. Whether you're looking for a quick afternoon hike or a full day of exploring, these local spots offer something for every outdoor lover. Below are a few standout destinations to inspire your next summer outing.

1. Devils Den (Specifically Fossil Flats Trailhead)

Devil's Den is one of the most iconic outdoor destinations in NWA, known for its dramatic rock formations, lush forests, and historic structures. In the beautiful Ozarks, this spot has multiple options for varying distance trails, with standalone bluffs and flowing creeks. One of the standout trails is Fossil Flats, especially for both hikers and mountain bikers.

The trail winds through thick woods, with small bridges, and follows the creek in a peaceful loop. It is perfect for a morning or late-afternoon adventure. It's also one of the best trails in the region for spotting wildlife, with deer, turtles, and, on rare occasions, foxes.

The trail ranges from 2.4 to 6 miles, at a moderate difficulty, typically taking around one to two hours to complete. Trail access is located in Camping Area A of Devil's Den State Park, 11333 W Arkansas Hwy 74, West Fork, AR 72774.

2. Lake Fayetteville

Lake Fayetteville is one of the most versatile outdoor spaces in the region. The 4.5-mile loop trail circles the lake with a mix of paved and natural-surface paths, making it perfect for walkers, runners, cyclists, and mountain bikers. Along the way, there are various stretches, some quiet coves, open fields, and tree tunnels that offer a refreshing break from the loop.

The lake itself is a hub for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Fayetteville Boat and Bike is on the trail with availability to rent out kayaks, canoes, aqua cycles, pontoon boats, fishing boats, trail bikes, mountain bikes, trikes, elliptical bicycles, pedal go karts, tandem bikes, and other outdoor equipment. Picnic areas and playgrounds make it a great family destination at Veteran Park, while the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, located on the southeast side, adds a peaceful, educational stop to your day.

3. Riverside Park

Tucked along the West Fork of the White River, Riverside Park is a quiet, refreshing retreat. The park has easy river access, shaded picnic tables, and plenty of open space. If you are looking for a less crowded and peaceful place to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of being outdoors, Riverside Park might be your next spot. The river itself offers a little something for everyone, with deeper pools for swimming, rocky ledges perfect for taking a small jump into the water, and shallow stretches where children can safely splash and play.

Bring a hammock to relax in the shade, or pack a picnic, because the park also has a large pavilion with lights and multiple grills for use. It is the perfect spot for families, with a nearby playground and field for all sorts of activities. If you prefer a low-key outdoor day, Riverside Park delivers exactly that.

4. Yellow Rock Trail

If you've ever seen photos of Devil's Den, chances are you have seen Yellow Rock Overlook. This 3-mile loop trail is one of the most popular hikes in the region, and for good reason.

The trail gradually climbs through the forest before opening up to a sweeping view of the Lee Creek Valley. The overlook is a massive limestone bluff that juts out over the treetops, offering one of the best lookout spots in Northwest Arkansas in every season. The hike is of moderate difficulty, making it accessible for most adventurers seeking a new place to explore.

5. Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake is the ultimate summer playground. With more than 480 miles of shoreline, the lake offers endless opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and exploring hidden coves.

The water is clear and cool, perfect for escaping the heat, and the surrounding cliffs and forests create a peaceful backdrop for any kind of adventure. It also offers many different selections of trails around the lake, like the Lake Loop Trail, Deep Woods Trail, Woodland Trail, Bog Trail, and others. Whether you want to rent a pontoon for the day at one of the many marinas, paddle into a quiet inlet, or simply relax on a lakeside beach, Beaver Lake has a spot for you. It is the perfect place to start and end your summer exploration.

Northwest Arkansas is full of outdoor gems, and summer is the perfect time to discover them. From forested trails to sweeping lakes, each destination offers its own unique way to unwind, explore, and reconnect with nature, all without leaving our own backyard.
