Cameron Cox began his career in software sales after graduating from Texas State University. Despite his success, he began seeking a change. After a chance encounter with a roofer at his church, Cox took “a week's vacation” to explore the roofing industry. This experience ignited a new passion, leading Cox to leave his software job and dive into the roofing business in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
In 2008 the roofing company relocated Cox back to Austin to help expand its presence. Unfortunately, the market crash hit hard. Desperate but determined, Cox reached out to his father, who had owned a lighting business in Austin before retiring. Together they founded Educated Roofing Systems (ERS) in 2009. Starting from scratch, they fabricated trim pieces by hand and manufactured roof panels on-site, working tirelessly to build their business.
While attending church in Bee Cave, Cox met Jeff Whitacre and the pair formed a strong bond through their shared faith. Whitacre, stuck in a miserable insurance job, received a casual offer from Cox to join ERS if he ever wanted a change. Two years later, when Cox’s father was diagnosed with cancer and had to step back from the business, Whitacre saw the opportunity to help his friend and fill the void. He left his job and hit the ground running, reaching out to custom home builders and leveraging his contacts in the construction industry. Whitacre’s leap of faith paid off, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Today, ERS has grown to a team of six sales managers continuously expanding their industry knowledge to better educate builders and homeowners on roofing options. But their story is not just about business success; it’s about community and resilience.
ERS is deeply embedded in the Dripping Springs community, consistently supporting the Dripping Springs Youth Sports Association, the Dripping Springs Education Foundation, and various other local initiatives.
The journey of ERS is a testament to the power of family, friendships, resilience, faith, and community. From the challenges of a market crash to the personal trials of illness, Cox and Whitacre have built a business that stands strong, not just through its services, but through its unwavering commitment to the people and community it serves.
