EYECARE TEXOMA LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

Dr. Eric Newberry Has A Vision For His New Practice In The Texoma Community

Last year, Downtown Denison welcomed a new addition to the eye care community. EyeCare Texoma, formerly Nielting Family Eyecare, was purchased by Dr. Eric Newberry from Dr. Dennis Nietling in March of 2024 and began seeing patients in June. Nietling Family Eyecare was one of the longest tenured eye care practices in Texoma. Dr. Nietling had owned the practice since the early 1980’s when he took over for Dr. Levinson who had been practicing in the downtown Denison area since the early 1940’s.

Although new to Denison, the Newberrys are not new to North Texas. Jennifer was born in Sherman and grew up in Pottsboro. Dr. Newberry grew up and completed professional school in Oklahoma, but once married, they were excited to move back to the area and opened their first practice in McKinney in 2003. Jennifer’s background in Commercial Real Estate helped guide the opening of the McKinney practice. The growth in the McKinney area allowed Newberry Vision Center to become one of the largest, most successful practices in the North Texas Region.

As their practice continued to grow, Eric and Jennifer felt it important for their three sons to grow up in a small town environment, similar to their own upbringing. In 2010, they moved their family to Melissa. While in Melissa, they often spent weekends and holidays on Lake Texoma and their boys fell in love with the lake life. In 2021, Eric and Jennifer decided to return home and moved their family to Pottsboro.

The Newberry’s feel the timing of their move to Texoma to be perfect. As fate would have it, Dr. Nietling had begun to consider retirement at about the same time that Dr. Newberry began to consider opening another practice in the area. The appeal of being close to home, Main Street such a unique setting, and the growth of the area were all factors that made Denison the logical choice. It was important to both doctors that there would be a smooth transition for existing patients, many of whom had been in the practice for over four decades. After several meetings, it was clear that Newberry’s passion for providing a great experience with quality eye care for the entire family was a perfect fit.

The Newberry’s and EyeCare Texoma are excited not only to carry on the tradition of providing quality eye care to the area, but to becoming a community partner and discovering more opportunities to serve. Whether it be helping with local ISD events, participating in the local Chamber of Commerce, or participating with traditions like Monsters on Main and Santa’s mailbox, they are always looking for more ways to be involved. “I served on the Economic Development Corporation for the City of Melissa when I lived there and I really enjoyed that. It was a great feeling to know I was helping to develop the city. I would love to do something similar here". According to Dr. Newberry, “I love what I do for a living. My job is truly a blessing. But I feel like I can do even more.”

Opening a new practice is challenging, but transforming an existing practice can be even more difficult. Fortunately, Jennifer and Dr. Newberry had the experience and knowledge to offer a smooth transition to all existing patients, while offering state-of-the-art services and equipment to attract new patients. In addition to the normal challenges of opening a new location, renovating a building that is over a hundred years old presented many unique “opportunities.” With hard work and the experience that Jennifer had from her prior knowledge in opening their McKinney practice, the office has seen significant changes. They are excited to grow the practice while providing a welcoming environment for unique and thorough eye care.

Dr. Newberry received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Northeastern State University. He is residency trained in ocular disease and refractive surgery and is excited to bring his passion and vast experience to the Texoma area. “It is so important to build trust with patients, existing and new. I want to build a practice here that everyone talks about and wants to come to.” EyeCare Texoma has the latest, state-of-the-art technology and equipment and can provide the most accurate diagnosis and prescriptions possible. Their staff members are caring, highly trained and knowledgeable. With his twenty-seven years of eye care experience and the benefits of a new facility, there is very little Dr. Newberry cannot handle on-site. “We can treat a wide variety of eye disorders. These include glaucoma, dry eyes, allergies, eye infections, cataracts, and macular degeneration. We strive to offer the best service. Our goal is to build long lasting relationships with our patients. There is a need for good primary eye care, and I believe EyeCare Texoma can provide that service.”
