Atlanta Academy began with a dream, a handful of passionate families, and a deep belief in what education could be. This year, the school proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary, a milestone rooted in purpose, passion, and a shared commitment to shaping bright futures.
“There were just four of us in the beginning, dividing the teaching and administrative duties among ourselves,” says Angela Naples, Head of School at Atlanta Academy. They opened their doors in the basement of a church, but within a month, enrollment jumped from thirteen to ninety students, proof that the vision was resonating. “Our story truly began on a wing and a prayer.”
A group of dedicated parents formed a Board of Directors, helping establish the school as a nonprofit and securing space at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, where Atlanta Academy continued to grow for seven years. But the real turning point came when they found a larger property in Roswell. “Malon Mimms called with extraordinary news. He wanted to donate the property! It was truly a gift from heaven.”
That generous gift allowed Atlanta Academy to transform 90,000 square feet into a state of the art educational campus complete with a gymnasium, media center, STEAM makerspace, outdoor classroom, labs, art rooms, amphitheater, and soccer field. Today, Atlanta Academy stands proudly as a two time National Blue Ribbon School and is accredited by COGNIA, SAIS, NAEYC and GISA.
People often say that what sets Atlanta Academy apart is not just the facilities or awards. It is the feeling. “There’s a warmth and welcoming spirit that radiates from our teachers and staff; a sense of joy, connection, and belonging that can’t be manufactured.” Walk through the hallways and you will see artwork, creativity in motion, and students who feel seen, heard, and valued.
From the beginning, educators have been at the heart of the mission. “Atlanta Academy was founded by teachers.” Their insight shapes everything from curriculum to culture, reinforcing that they are a vital piece to our success.”
Looking ahead, that same spirit fuels what comes next: expansion. “One of my greatest aspirations is to expand our mission by adding a high school.” With talented educators and big dreamers leading the way, the future is bright. As Angela Naples says, “The possibilities are endless, and the sky’s the limit!”
