One of the simplest ways to incorporate fall trends in your space is by accessorizing. "I've noticed that in the fall people start wanting warmer tones, candles and accessories to cheer up the space once they go inside," Mitchell explains. By bringing light and color into a room, anyone can make their home feel more welcoming during the colder seasons.
When asked what’s currently trending in the showroom at Verbarg’s, Mitchell shares that the customer’s attention is primarily on craftsmanship and living and family room items.
"Many people are focusing on American-made products and upholstered items like sofas and chairs right now," shares Mitchell.
Togetherness is a big part of the autumn months, and while it is important to have inviting common areas, the holidays also call for practical choices for hosting and serving comforting meals.
Mitchell notes, "Dining rooms and kitchen furniture will start trending now and into the fall because people are thinking about the holidays and entertaining."
Incorporating textures, patterns and colors when refreshing your home design adds inviting ambiance and warmth to your rooms, especially for fall.
Now is the time to get comfortable with color! While bold colors and patterns can seem overwhelming, they can also be a tasteful way to liven up a space when used thoughtfully. "I am happy to see more color – and gray becoming a thing of the past," remarks Mitchell. "I love suggesting color to my customers."
While neutrals are still popular and help make a space feel grounded, Mitchell explains that people have begun opting for warmer-toned neutrals rather than gray-forward palettes. Beige and cream are classics, and brown is a great color for larger pieces to act as focal points in a room.
"For larger pieces, I'm seeing a greater variety of neutrals, such as beige, cream and brown," emphasizes Mitchell.
Adding richer colors elevates the status of neutrals and completes your space. Mitchell also observes that customers are leaning towards warmer blue tones instead of cooler shades, which are often paired with grays.
"We are seeing more prints and color gain popularity," says Mitchell. "We are still seeing neutrals but in warmer tones paired with greens and gold."
Incorporating colors and prints into your home doesn’t have to mean sacrificing elegance or simplicity. While color can seem intimidating, there’s a helpful trick Mitchell suggests to her uncertain customers.
"If they’re hesitant about using color, I suggest adding it in smaller pieces such as chairs, ottomans or pillows," advises Mitchell. "Use the neutrals in larger pieces such as sofas and sectionals and add color in smaller increments."
For example, if your couch is brown, you could try accessorizing with green pillows. A pop of color or pattern can go a long way toward improving the atmosphere of your space.
Mitchell urges people to remember to make their homes their own. While trends can be a helpful starting point for updating your home, it has to feel like you.
"I tell my customers to purchase what they love and not what everyone tells them to do; after all, they are living with it," Mitchell imparts.

Verbarg’s Furniture & Design was founded by Sheri Mitchell’s father, Harold Verbarg, in Amelia, Ohio, in 1978. Harold began making furniture at the age of 15 and later started selling it. He eventually became the president of a local furniture store before deciding to open his own shop. His main goal was to offer the best quality and design for a fair price. Sheri grew up in the industry, working alongside her dad on odd jobs at Verbarg’s until she was hired full-time in 1987 after also working in the fashion design industry. Her mother, Shirley Verbarg, is now the primary owner, with Sheri’s sister, Debbie Gilligan, serving as President.
