Family Promise of Lake Houston shares hope with families experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit's mission is to create a foundation where families can begin again.
For Cara Bayete and Caren Marroquin, that transformation took place when both women entered the program, navigating life after ending harmful relationships. As mothers making the difficult decision to leave to provide a safer situation for their children, they did not take it lightly. Both families had to move elsewhere to distance themselves from their old lives and find safety and stability. Both women made the brave choice to move to Texas. Now, both of their paths, similar yet unique, led them to Family Promise.
Cara arrived seeking the safety that Texas Laws provide to women with children, and she yearned for the space to rebuild. By stepping into an unfamiliar place for her next chapter, she did so with courage and determination. After leaving behind her previous life and starting over with her daughter in a new state, she entered the program needing not only stability but also time and support to truly rebuild the sense that this wasn't temporary. Through Family Promise, Cara found a structured environment rooted in dignity, accountability, and community. She was met with compassion at every turn and was given the tools to move forward. She and her daughter were surrounded by people who believed in their ability to succeed. Over time, she rebuilt their life, eventually working towards graduation from the program and becoming a homeowner.
Caren's journey shares that same resilience and determination as Cara's. Caren is a mother of four, and when she entered the program, she had never lived independently. Having spent the majority of her years as a stay-at-home mother, she was suddenly faced with the daunting task of rebuilding her life from the ground up on her own. It felt to her like a crash course in many of life's milestones she should already have been equipped to handle. From understanding how to apply for housing to managing finances to securing employment, she was new to so much. Family Promise gave her the space to learn while still caring for her children. They were with her every step of the way, helping her to lean into the required growth, offering her courage, and helping her stay persistent.
At each milestone, the program supported both women's success and their ability to replicate it. Family Promise did not simply provide temporary relief; instead, it gave them no time limits on their journey toward long-term stability and success.
Two years after graduating from Family Promise, Cara became an active leader within the community that once supported her. Today, she serves as the Director of Membership Development for Partnership Lake Houston while also giving back as an Executive Board Member for Family Promise. In both roles, she uses her voice and experience to advocate for families in need and strengthen others in the very community that once helped her to rebuild.
Caren learned not only how to provide for her family, but also how to build a future. She set goals, followed through on them, and discovered a level of strength she did not know she possessed. Today, she serves her community as a Houston Police Department officer, a role she never imagined for herself but that is now a symbol of her resilience. Her role shows future possibilities for her children, who look up to their mother for how she serves our community, and can focus on being the first line of aid for other women who may find themselves on a path similar to her past life.
Cara and Caren represent the power of women who choose to rise even when the path forward is uncertain. Their journeys reflect the importance of programs like Family Promise and the impact they have on the communities they are a part of. It is undeniable the strength these two women possess, and their stories are defined not by the hardships but by the courage it took to set their children up to flourish. Now they lead and serve their communities with grace.
