Feast for the Senses

Thankful for Nature’s Fall Abundance: Designing Fall Centerpieces from House of Posie

As the leaves turn golden and crisp, and the cool air hints at the coming holiday season, the art of creating fall floral centerpieces can add joy and beauty to an abundant season. At House of Posie, founder and floral artist Jessika Mazure, shares, “We believe in elevating the ambiance of any gathering with the perfect mix of flowers, candles, and personal touches”.

Jessika was generous with her time and experienced advice when I interviewed her about the top trends, floral choices, and tips for creating memorable fall centerpieces that reflect the season’s beauty.

Words of wisdom from Jessika:
Fall is a feast for the senses, offering a vibrant spectrum of colors and textures. This season, we’re seeing a shift from the subdued tones of previous years toward rich, bold hues. Jewel tones such as mustard, emerald green, and sapphire dominate the landscape, setting the stage for gatherings that celebrate thankfulness and togetherness. Autumn is about embracing the bounty of nature—capturing the vibrancy and abundance of the season visually. From an aesthetic standpoint, it’s a time to experiment and let your creativity flourish.

When designing a Thanksgiving centerpiece, draw inspiration from the colors and textures of the season. It’s not just about the flowers, but also the feeling of warmth and gratitude. Think of your table as a visual representation of the season’s abundance, with layers of foliage, berries, and seasonal elements that evoke the coziness of fall.

For this season, popular palettes include mustards, rich burgundies, deep oranges, and splashes of sapphire. These colors capture the essence of fall, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for your guests. Whether you’re using mums, dahlias, or foliage, the idea is to play with depth and variety. A monochromatic arrangement in one bold color can be equally striking, providing a modern yet timeless look.

This fall, it’s not just about the flowers. Incorporating non-floral elements like gourds, pine cones, and berries adds texture and dimension to your arrangements. One of my favorite touches is the use of pheasant feathers for a rustic, elegant look. The holidays are a time to go big, so don’t be afraid to layer on the joy with these extra touches. It’s less about minimalism and more about celebrating life’s abundance.

As the temperature cools, certain flowers come into their own. Mums, for instance, are incredibly hardy and come in a range of colors, sizes, and varietals, making them a versatile choice for any centerpiece. These blooms pair beautifully with berries and foliage for an arrangement that is both full and textured. Grocery stores are a great place to pick up these seasonal flowers—don’t overlook what’s readily available to you!

One of the keys to a successful fall centerpiece is balance. If you’re going bold with deep oranges or jewel tones, don’t overthink it. Ferns, for example, can add a beautiful flair, giving your arrangement a sense of movement and dimension. Play with layers by tucking flowers in and pulling some out, creating a sense of depth. The best designer for your table is you—trust your instincts and create what is most visually pleasing to your eye.

Creating a centerpiece at home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start by foraging in your yard—often, the best additions are right outside your door. For example, ferns can provide structure, while small pumpkins from the grocery store add a whimsical touch. As for flowers, stick to one color tone for a cohesive look. Remember, variety is key, but simplicity often speaks volumes.

When designing for Thanksgiving, consider the layout of your table. For family-style meals, keep centerpieces low to avoid obstructing conversation. A beautiful arrangement of three—one larger centerpiece flanked by two smaller ones—creates balance and allows for interaction across the table. Candles are the final touch, adding warmth and creating an intimate, celebratory atmosphere. The act of lighting a candle symbolizes the specialness of the moment and enhances the mood for your meal.

The Joy of Creating

There’s a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from creating something beautiful with your own hands. Whether you’re designing a centerpiece for a large gathering or an intimate dinner, the process of arranging flowers and non-floral elements taps into creativity and gratitude. At House of Posie, we are passionate about sharing these tips with our community through floral arranging classes and events—because creating beauty should be a celebration in itself.

House of Posie is built on a love for community, gathering, and creating memorable experiences. Whether you’re designing a fall centerpiece for a special occasion or a simple family dinner, remember: you have the best taste for your own table. Trust yourself, embrace the season, and enjoy the process of creation.

Jessika Mazure, Floral Artist, House of Posie

After many years of making floral arrangements for friends, I decided to turn my hobby into a business. In 2015, House of Posie was born! I am passionate about flowers and creating something special for any occasion. From little posies to wedding flowers, I love meeting with clients and bringing their vision to life. When I am not designing flowers, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three sons, spoiling my dog Gongju, playing golf, and hanging out with my Mercer Island friends!

At House of Posie, we believe everyone should have access to beautiful arrangements without breaking the bank. For those who want to DIY, I recommend mixing different flowers in the same color palette or using thrifted items like vases or decorative ornaments. It’s all about playing with what you have and trusting your own creativity. We offer custom designs for Thanksgiving, and our Instagram gallery is a great place to see past work for inspiration.
