Festive DIY Nail Designs

Fall in Love With the Art of Nails

This festive buffalo plaid nail design is simpler than you think and unquestionably cozy. It is a timeless pattern that can be used for different seasons by changing the color scheme. It is also easy to customize with your own flair—which makes things fun and expressive. Here, I will show you one way to paint buffalo plaid, two-fingered (per hand) accent manicure using gel polish. This can also be done with regular nail polish, just be sure to wait for it to dry in between each step.

The tools needed are a dotting tool, a striping nail art brush, and lint-free wipes. All of these items can be found on Amazon—I recommend the Winstonia nail art brushes. It is imperative that you use lint-free wipes to avoid fuzz ruining your work. To get this look, the polishes needed are shine and matte topcoats, along with black, white, brown, and two of your favorite fall colors. I chose to use orange and teal. In between colors, wipe off your nail art brush with the lint-free wipes.

Step one, paint your desired accent nails white. On the side (perhaps in a ceramic dish), mix shine top coat with the color you chose for the plaid. This will make it sheer, and we will use this for the thick light orange lines of the pattern.

Step two, using your nail art brush, paint two thick vertical lines.

Step three, paint thick horizontal lines. The amount you will paint will depend on how long your nails are. If you have short nails, you will have enough room to paint two or three. Try to have the lines evenly spaced.

Step four, using the color from the bottle (no longer using the sheer mix), paint in the squares where the lines overlap. This nail is done for now.

Step five, on your other accent nail, paint two horizontal curved lines (think the top of a heart) in the center of your nail with black polish.

Step six, using the sheer mix, paint evenly spaced horizontal lines under the curves.

Step seven, paint evenly spaced vertical lines under the curves.

Step eight, using the dotting tool and the color from the bottle, put a dot in every place the lines overlap. This creates a mini buffalo plaid.

Step nine, paint it over with shine top coat to even things out. This will make it easier to layer the pumpkin with added details.

Step ten, paint the outline of a pumpkin stem with black polish.

Step eleven, fill the stem in with brown.

Step twelve, paint two curved vertical lines within the pumpkin to give it dimension.

Step thirteen, paint a leaf with your other fall color choice. This nail is done for now.

Step fourteen, paint your remaining nails with your leaf color. This will tie it all together in a beautiful way.

Step fifteen, top all your nails with a shine top coat to make them even and strong and then go over them with matte top coat. Matte finish is perfect for fall nail designs.
