The Mariachi Las Dahlias stands in the shade of Parker Station, delighting the crowd lined up to enter the first-ever Fiesta Parker. An enormous marquee lists different entry fees and what’s in store. Wristbands are distributed, IDs are checked, and a stroll to the first tent means a wheel spin for prizes. A spectacular day was in store.
The beauty of Latin culture surrounds us in our amazing town. August's Fiesta Parker celebration promised a day inspired by Mexico, Spain, Central and South American countries, and it did not disappoint. Hosted by the newly formed Parker Latino Business Committee, Fiesta Parker brought the spirit of Latin culture to our community and watched it thrive.
As the late-summer sun beat down, Chamber members greeted participants with Fiesta Parker fans, while cooling towels or sunglasses were won at nearby booths. The fenced-off section of the Parker Station parking lot featured local restaurants and businesses, as well as ornate jewelry, hats, and beautiful, flamboyantly designed dresses. Bystanders wandered the area, speaking to owners, taste-testing Tajín, and purchasing whatever they could fit in their bags. It was a one-stop shop featuring the eclectic brilliance of Latin culture.
Shopping is always more fun if you can move your hips to the music of local Latin bands like iZCalli, Banda Rockera La Negra, Chimbangle Band, and DJ Jorge Cruz. Each musician graced the stage throughout the afternoon, along with patrons celebrating along to the Zumba and Peruvian dancers.
Parker residents watched the delightfully entertaining Hugo’s Lucha Libre, a style of professional wrestling originating in Mexico. Wrestlers adorned with colorful masks took on their opponents in an acrobatic fight with cheers and jeers for high-flying jumps and hits.
As delicious food trucks and drink tents lined the outskirts, this family-oriented celebration also showcased multiple bounce houses and cornhole boards. Even the mid-afternoon rain shower couldn’t shake the revelry, as everyone gathered together under tents to laugh and embrace the beautiful Latin culture at the heart of Parker. Next year’s fiesta event can’t come soon enough.
