For most people, barbecue is a summertime pastime, a chance to gather around the grill with family and friends. For Kurt Mueller, it’s a lifelong passion that started when he was just a kid. Growing up, weekend cookouts were a family affair. His dad was the pitmaster, and Mueller, barely eight or nine years old, was his apprentice. Together they learned the art of smoke, patience and flavor. The lessons weren’t just about food; they were about family, perseverance and taking pride in doing something well.

As Mueller grew older, life took him in a different direction. He built a successful career as a financial planner, guiding others toward stability and success. But even while wearing a suit and tie, the smoke from those childhood cookouts never rarely left him. Barbecue remained in his blood. In 2021 he decided to test his skills on the competition circuit not just as a hobbyist, but as a student of the craft. He refined his techniques, studied every detail and poured his heart into perfecting the balance of smoke, seasoning and tenderness that great barbecue demands.

Then in July 2022 Mueller’s hard work caught national attention when he appeared on the Food Network show BBQ USA, hosted by celebrity chef Michael Symon. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating. Competing alongside some of the country’s best pitmasters confirmed something he had known deep down for years–barbecue wasn’t just a passion; it was his calling.

By January 2023 Mueller found himself at a crossroads. He describes that moment as a “deep conversation with the man in the mirror.” The reflection staring back at him was a man who had achieved professional success but who wasn’t fulfilled. That conversation changed everything. “I realized that financial planning wasn’t what I was passionate about,” Mueller said. “Barbecue was what made me feel alive.”

By September 2023, he made the leap, leaving behind his financial career to pursue his dream full-time. With determination and faith, he invested in his first food trailer, officially launching Ironhead BBQ. The name itself reflects strength and grit, two qualities that have guided him from the beginning.

It didn’t take long for the community to take notice. Word spread quickly about the smoky aroma drifting from his trailer and the mouthwatering flavors that followed. Lines grew longer, events booked faster and before long, Ironhead BBQ had become a local sensation. Each plate served was a labor of love: ribs slow-smoked to perfection, brisket so tender it nearly melts and sides that taste like home.

Fueled by that growing demand, Mueller took the next bold step. In August 2025, he opened the doors to his first brick-and-mortar restaurant in North Augusta. The space is everything he dreamed it would be: warm, welcoming and filled with the unmistakable scent of smoke. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice and faith. It’s a place where family recipes meet competition-level craftsmanship, and where every customer feels like part of the Ironhead family.

As the holiday season approaches, Mueller is excited to continue sharing his passion with others. Ironhead now offers catering for corporate gatherings, family celebrations and private events, bringing the flavor of his signature barbecue straight to your table.

Reflecting on his journey, Mueller shared a quote that perfectly captures his story: “Doing this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most fulfilling. When you love something, you work harder at it.” Those words embody his spirit, a reminder that the best things in life are earned through passion and persistence.

What began as a boy learning barbecue beside his father has become something much bigger, a thriving business built on heart, smoke and the courage to follow a dream. In a world where comfort often wins over courage, Mueller stands as proof that it’s never too late to chase what truly sets your soul on fire.
