Dr. Dawn Harrell did not follow a straight path into medicine. Her journey began on the sidelines of high school athletics, working as an athletic trainer and building a career grounded in movement, injury assessment, and recovery. She earned advanced degrees, moved through different professional settings, and continued to feel a persistent sense that something was missing.
That realization became clearer during a season of life that demanded she change. While raising a family, Dr. Harrell began to reassess what she wanted; was she building the life she wanted? In 2019, she decided to return to school to pursue a doctorate in chiropractic care. It was not just a career pivot, but a second act.
After completing her degree and stepping into an associate role at a local clinic, she received an opportunity. Within months of passing her board exams, she moved from employee to owner. Today, as the owner of Bear Paw Medical in Lake Houston, Dr. Harrell has created a practice that reflects her background of more than two decades of working with the human body.
Bear Paw Medical is committed to individualized care. Dr. Harrell is intentional about avoiding a one-size-fits-all model. Each patient is evaluated thoroughly, with attention to their personal history, daily movement, and any current conditions. From there, care is built around the individual rather than a standard protocol. Patients are not simply treated and sent on their way. They are educated, guided, and included in the process.
Instead of relying heavily on clinical terminology, which can feel impersonal, Dr. Harrell focuses on clear explanations that connect with her patients' day-to-day lives. In the Lake Houston area, patients often have access to either chiropractic care or more traditional medical services, but rarely both in a coordinated, accessible setting. Bear Paw Medical is designed to bridge that divide by combining rehabilitation, chiropractic care, and medical services in one location.
That means fewer appointments for many patients, and they no longer need them throughout their care. They can stay within their local community and receive care that is locally connected. That vision is why Dr. Harrell chose to build her practice in Lake Houston, where her life was already rooted. Her children attend school in the area, and she is actively involved in local organizations such as Kingwood Business Women. She does not see herself as separate from her patients, but as part of the same daily scenes of the community.
Understanding the demands of your neighbors' everyday lives and helping those who become patients feel better as they manage their lives is central to her approach. It is also what led her to expand beyond traditional chiropractic care. By bringing in a nurse practitioner and continuing to expand the clinic's medical side, Dr. Harrell is working toward a model that allows patients to receive more comprehensive care without leaving the community.
Building something like this has not come without challenges. She remains deeply grateful for her team, including nurse practitioner Lindsay Mabe, who plays a critical role in supporting the clinic's expanded care model. Transitioning into ownership required her to quickly learn. She sought out mentorship, invested in herself, and leaned into the areas where she needed support. That willingness to continue learning reflects the same mindset that led her to her second act in the first place.
For Dr. Harrell, as the curtain rises again on her next stage of life, it is not about perfection or having every step mapped out. It is about choosing to move forward, even without complete certainty on where you're standing in the next scene. As Bear Paw Medical continues to grow, she knows her team is building something that better reflects our community's needs, and her focus remains on that. Patients deserve to feel understood, to have nearby treatment locations, and to receive care tailored to their unique needs.
