July signifies one major event– Independence Day. Although the Fourth of July has been a national holiday since 1870, the actual celebrations, including fireworks, started during the Revolutionary War in 1776.
After adopting the Declaration of Independence, minor events occurred in 1776, but The History Channel notes the first official fireworks event took place a year later, marking the Declaration’s anniversary. Naval ships gathered at the Philadelphia river on July 4, 1777, and fired a 13-gun salute for the original colonies, from its cannons, making it a national tradition ever since.
Almost 250 years later, the festivities continue. The Texoma Region is home to many fireworks celebrations of note. The City of Sherman will host its 16th Annual “Lights on the Lake” on Thursday, July 3rd at Pecan Grove West Park. It will include a free concert by 90’s Rock Band, Stone Temple Pilots, followed by a fireworks show. Sara McRae, Tourism/Main Street Manager for the City of Sherman, says this is “Texoma’s biggest and best Independence Day celebration!” For more information, refer to CityofSherman.com or via the city’s social media.
On July 4th, visit Denison’s 38th Annual “Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration” at Munson Stadium, promising to be even bigger and better than previous years. Fireworks can be seen throughout downtown Denison and the surrounding area. It is recommended to park nearby and bring lawn chairs (note that they are not allowed in the stadium). Visit DowntownDenison.com to learn more.
Choctaw Casinos in Durant will also be hosting its annual fireworks show beginning at nightfall. You may also synchronize the show to music, tuning into KLBC, 106.3 FM.
Attention professional rodeo fans! The Whitesboro Rodeo, hosted by the Whitesboro Riding Club, has been a part of the Texoma region for over 68 years. Besides watching great rodeo action, the event will conclude with fireworks following its completion. Learn more at WhitesboroRidingClub.org
Finally, to finish off the holiday, on Saturday, July 5, 2025, plan on attending Highport Marina’s “Highport Fireworks Spectacular”. Around the lake, the Lake Texoma Association will also be hosting a fireworks display following a live music concert near the Roosevelt Bridge in Kingston, Oklahoma.
Independence Day celebrations in the Texoma area promise to be fun, festive, and full of fireworks, music, and entertainment. Grab a lawn chair, put on your best patriotic outfits, and join the Texoma Region in rejoicing in our country’s independence!
