After working as a flooring installer for 25 years, Dan Lerach had the chance to buy a long-standing, successful business in his hometown of Fridley. “I took over Big Bob's in 2025 and changed the name,” he says. “Moore Flooring is a play on words because we're on East Moore Lake Drive on Moore Lake.
Dan had worked for Big Bob’s, which had been in business since 2001, in the past and always appreciated how it operated. So, while he changed the name, modernized the logo, and made it feel homier by adding a couple of plants and changing the overall layout, it was important to him to keep that small-business, local-store feel.
The main salesperson from Bob’s has stayed on and greets everyone at the door, so long-time customers see a familiar face. Dan also knows many of his customers from his installation days. “I've personally worked with every crew we use, and they’re all experienced. I still go out to job sites too.” His sons, Jonathan and Nathan, occasionally help in the store as well.
Having been an installer, he understands what it takes to keep customers happy. “I didn’t come at this with a salesperson or a business owner type of mentality. Instead, I came at it from the service side because that's what I always did. Rather than just try to sell something, I ask people what they’re looking for and what they need.”
For many homeowners, deciding on a product that will not only look great but also work best in their space can be overwhelming. “If you don't know anything about flooring, and you’re trusting the people you're asking, you want to make sure those people are knowledgeable,” says Dan.
For example, most people have heard of Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring, but there are many different subsections of that product. “You need people who can explain the differences between a floor that costs $4 a square foot versus one that costs $6 a square foot. This is where a small, more personal store such as ours is going to beat a big box store every time.”
While LVP and other hard-surface flooring are very popular, wall-to-wall carpeting is also still in demand. “There's something to be said about getting out of bed in bare feet in the morning and putting them on something soft and comfy,” he says. “You hear about all these trends, but carpet's always been a thing. It’s never really gone out of style.”
In some homes, especially if the subflooring has imperfections, carpet and padding are the way to go. “If you want to make over the look of a room and you want the best bang for your buck, carpet is going to be the quickest and easiest solution.
Since everyone has different budgets, Moore Flooring carries affordable entry-level products all the way up to high-end products found in luxury homes. “Even our entry level is still a good quality Mohawk product,” says Dan. “We won’t sell a plank for a couple bucks because it's just thin plastic that won’t last.” Many of these cheaper products' claims are also very misleading when they boast, "Easy installation that can even go over your existing floor."
“These are floors that even a professional with two and a half decades of experience can have trouble clicking together. We stay away from those products because we install everything we sell too, and I don't want to set up the installers for failure. Because, at the end of the day, I can have a pretty logo and a pretty store, but if the installer does a horrible job, that's what people remember.”
When it comes to carpet, hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl and tile, Moore only offers top brands that include Mohawk, Engineered Floors®, Stanton and Mannington®. He trusts these manufacturers to stand behind their products if there’s ever an issue. “I would install anything I carry in my own home.”
Dan, who lives with his sons only one mile from the store, runs into his customers all the time. So, he must ensure the products and services he provides are high quality.
Many of his customers are happy to be able to continue shopping for their flooring needs in the same location. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” he says.
