Platt Family Law can help you and your family negotiate some of life's turbulent waters

Platt Family Law is one of Roswell’s most highly regarded law firms and has a team of professionals to help you navigate the, sometimes, murky waters of finances when it comes to family law. With a combined 28 years of experience, founding attorney Rachel Platt and fellow attorney Kimberly Wise will take you under their professional wing while keeping your best interests top priority.

"Money is often the cause of demise in many relationships.  Whether it be the lack of communication regarding money, insufficient funds to cover debts, or excessive spending, often parties disagree on financial matters, and this can put a tremendous amount of stress on relationships,” says Ms. Platt.

This is why it is of utmost importance that new couples be transparent about their financial pictures before combining their lives. Communication is key before marriage in child rearing, household expectations and how both parties plan to handle their finances. Ms. Platt relays, “I think couples need transparency with all things, especially financial matters.  Couples should discuss their finances, develop a budget together and be in agreement regarding large expenditures.  I think it is advisable for couples to meet with a financial advisor early on in their relationship and continue periodically to set financial goals and have a plan that they agree to and can stick to over the years”.

Organizing your financial life together can reveal deficiencies in each other’s portfolio so they can be discussed, give you an opportunity to plan for the future and bring you together as a couple.  Some couples may opt to develop a prenuptial agreement so that there are no gray areas. Ms. Platt states, “ A prenuptial agreement can be a great tool to protect assets that a person is bringing to the marriage, as well as, a  great tool to contract around what our divorce laws provide for dividing assets.  If a person has assets that he or she wishes to protect, I think they need to be upfront about that with their soon-to-be spouse and have a discussion about what the terms of a prenuptial agreement should be.”

With Plat Family Law on your side, you can procure a partner to guide you and a professional to help you navigate the unexpected events that life can bring.
