Adventures In Our Back Yard

Four Beautiful Adventures in Nature, All Less Than Three Hours Away

It's no secret that one of the major appeals to life on the front range is access to nature. Here in Fort Collins we might even be luckier than most - Highway 14 is just ten miles from Old Town and offers endless possibilities up the Poudre Canyon and beyond. There's a good chance you've already taken a trip, or twenty, up the canyon for a hike or to fish or raft. Out of all the endless possibilities that lay west-ish of town, we wanted to share some of our favorites - arranged by drive time from town.

Gateway Natural Area - 22 Minutes - This close to home gem is an easy choice. With a well-maintained and designed park, excellent fishing on both the Poudre River and Seaman Reservoir just upstream, this gorgeous spot really does offer it all. Wonderful views, hiking, swimming, kayaking, grilling out, the list goes on and on

Pingree Park - 1 Hour 30 Minutes - Whether you’re aiming for a weekend camping trip or just a day trip to get out into the wilderness, this place is a great start. Tons of camping, the CSU Mountain Campus, gorgeous views of Mummy Pass and trails to places like Emmaline Lake or an old B-17 airplane crash site, the adventure here is limitless. I have spent hours wandering through these woods and now that summer is back I can’t wait to go again.

Long Draw Reservoir - 2 Hours 15 Minutes - This one is truly a classic. A high mountain reservoir offers views that are truly picturesque, with excellent fishing, camping and hiking trails, all that’s missing is you! Bring your paddleboard or just a book to read, enjoy the views, and keep an eye out for the moose that frequently pass through the area. This area is only accessible for a few months of the year so make sure not to miss your chance at what is easily one of the most beautiful drive-up spots in the canyon.

North Sand Hills - 2 Hours 40 Minutes - Were you aware you didn’t have to trek south to the national park to enjoy sand dunes? While this area is on a smaller scale, the stark juxtaposition of massive sand dunes and snow capped mountain peaks is in no way lost. Whether you’re inclined to hike and explore or take out the four wheelers, North Sand Hills provides an opportunity to experience the Rockies in a way that is truly unique and well worth the drive to see something that isn't readily found in a region like ours.
