Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but the holiday has a much more important meaning to our country than just fireworks and cookouts.

Fighting for freedom from the British, American colonists sacrificed and bled in order for the United States to become independent in 1776. As we celebrate America’s 244th Birthday, many Americans plan on spending time with family, firing up the grill, and lighting up the sky with fireworks.

“'We live in the greatest country in the world that allows us the freedom to pursue our dreams, ambitions and live life to its fullest!' That is what Fourth of July means to my husband, Sharif," said Stacie. Because the Khans are new to Oklahoma City, having opened a V's Barbershop at Quail Springs within the last year, they do not have many family members close by to celebrate the holiday with. A former U.S. Marine, Sharif wanted to honor those who serve their country and community. V's Barbershop offers a 20% discount to the military, law enforcement and first responders.

State Senator Stephanie Bice

"For me, the Fourth of July is a day to celebrate everything that America is - independence, freedom, families, and service. We owe a great deal of debt to our forefathers who pledged to build the free nation that we enjoy today, and to the men and women who have won and preserved our freedoms, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Bice.

Bice has served in the Oklahoma Senate from the 22nd district since 2014. In 2020, she announced she is running for the Republican nomination in Oklahoma's 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

"Our family celebration will look different this year, but will be no less important," she said. "We’ll spend the morning walking in Bethany Freedom Fest parade with our volunteers for my Congressional campaign."

Brent Gibson of Gibson of Gibson Custom Homes

"The 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holidays to celebrate. It's a reminder of the great country we live in and what our forefathers fought for to give us independence and freedom. We should all be thankful and not take it for granted. It always comes with a price," said Gibson.
The Gibsons enjoy family gatherings, watching the downtown parade in Edmond and seeing the military planes fly over. An outdoor barbecue is always in order along with homemade ice cream, and swimming with the grandkids at the pool.
"Nighttime is especially wonderful as we gather to watch the fireworks at UCO campus," he said. "The orchestra playing John Phillip Sousa music and the Star-Spangled Banner always brings a tear to my eye and great pride in my heart. I'm glad to be an American!"
