At just 18 years old, while staying at a Swiss retreat with a group of male authors whose stories were failing to excite her, Shelley spent a weekend writing a short story titled The Monster. Thrilled by her initial draft, her husband encouraged her to expand it into the classic novel we know today: Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The title directly references the Greek mythological figure who stole fire from the gods, perfectly mirroring Victor Frankenstein's dangerous pursuit of creating life.
