JJ Hornig’s journey from the bustling streets of New York City to the tranquil neighborhoods of Minnesota is a tale steeped in creativity and perseverance. Growing up on Long Island and spending over two decades in NYC, Janine always had a flair for public relations and a passion for hospitality. In 2012, as her love for travel blossomed, she began renting out her apartment whenever she was away. This side venture opened her eyes to the potential of the short-term rental market, planting the seeds for what would eventually become her thriving business—Roxy Rentals.
After meeting her husband, who expressed a desire to return to his Midwest roots, Janine made the leap to Minnesota at the end of 2019. As they settled in, they began acquiring various properties, each with its own story and character. Rather than sell them, they decided to embrace the potential of the Airbnb-model, transforming their spaces into welcoming havens for traveling guests. “What sets us apart in this over-saturated market is our deep understanding of hospitality,” Janine explains. “It’s not just about providing a place to sleep; it’s about creating memorable experiences for our guests.”
From the moment a traveler visits the Roxy Rentals website, their experience is designed to be seamless and user-friendly. Janine and her team have meticulously crafted an easy reservation process, ensuring that guests can book their stay without confusion. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with thoughtful touches like welcome gifts and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages, creating an immediate sense of comfort. “We think of every situation,” Janine notes, “like providing quick meals for families arriving late at night. It’s all about anticipating needs and going the extra mile.”
The couple’s path wasn’t without its challenges. Moving to different locations, renovating properties, and navigating local regulations took hard work and adaptability. Their journey included a stint in Stillwater, where they encountered unexpected hurdles with licensing for short-term rentals. Rather than deter them, these challenges inspired them to integrate more deeply into the community, ensuring that they aligned with local legislation while still offering top-notch guest experiences. Roxy Rentals became official in 2021.
Fast forward to today, Roxy Rentals has blossomed into a portfolio of eight distinct properties, each radiating the spirit of home. Janine prides herself on the artistry and craftsmanship found within the properties, often collaborating with local artisans and furniture makers to create uniquely curated environments. “We want our guests to feel that this isn’t just a place to stay; it’s their second home,” she declares.
Janine continues, “We also now offer special amenities, designed to elevate every moment of a stay. These include: professional photography sessions, chef-prepared gourmet meals, stylist and makeup artist appointments, early check-in or late check-out, a fully stocked fridge, and baby gear rentals. Each amenity can be selected and customized during booking.”
The name “Roxy Rentals” came to life serendipitously—a moment of inspiration struck when their dog, Roxy, ambled into the room during a brainstorming session for their LLC name. “It felt perfect. Roxy represents comfort and warmth, qualities we infuse into every rental,” Janine shares.
As Janine reflects on their journey—navigating the intricacies of property management, partnering with local artists, and investing in memorable guest experiences—she emphasizes the importance of community, creativity, and resilience. “We’ve moved five times in three years, and it’s been a whirlwind, but every challenge has only fueled our determination to create something beautiful with Roxy Rentals.”
Whether you’re a weary traveler or a family seeking a perfect getaway, Roxy Rentals is where your next home away from home awaits—with open arms and a welcoming heart.
