At his clinic in Kamuela, Dr. Mizuba blends aloha-spirit care with world-class therapies to transform wellness for island residents and beyond. Ever refining his craft and expanding his expertise, Dr. Mizuba has made Mizuba Chiropractic a thriving place of healing.
Dr. Mizuba is a pioneer in advanced healing modalities on the Big Island. With more than three decades of experience in sports medicine and chiropractic care, he integrates cutting-edge therapies such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) to help patients heal from injuries, regenerate tissue and rediscover the freedom of movement.
It all began in 1990, far from home, while interning in Los Angeles, where Dr. Mizuba had an experience that would shape his career. “I was able to observe the team chiropractor for the Los Angeles Lakers,” he recalls. “I observed this individual who had many skills and was directly able to have a positive impact on the players.”
What impressed him most was not just the technical expertise, but the collaboration among professionals working toward a single goal—optimal performance.
Dr. Mizuba became a diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians and went on to serve at the highest levels—Major League Baseball, professional hockey and the U.S. Open Golf Championship. He also served at Olympic training centers in Colorado Springs and Lake Placid.
While Dr. Mizuba served others in the sports community, he was also active in marathon swimming. Through chiropractic care, as well as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, he recovered quickly from smaller injuries, preventing them from becoming bigger and more chronic problems. He reflects, “I felt fresher, faster as a result of doing these simple things.”
Despite those high-level experiences, Dr. Mizuba’s heart remained rooted in Hawai‘i. He and his family returned home to the Big Island to continue his career, collaborating with other health care professionals to improve people’s well-being. “My family is from the Big Island,” he shares. “Each of us tries to make a positive impact on the lives of the people here in our community.”
Today, his experiences have shaped a practice that serves both athlete-level clients and everyday island residents—keiki (children), kūpuna (grandparents) and everyone in between. “Training in the professional sports world has been rewarding,” he admits. “However, witnessing the positive changes in people’s lives here on the Big Island has been a huge blessing to myself and my family.”
HBOT is one of the practice’s most transformative services. “We increase atmospheric pressure above 1.5 atmospheres and administer pure oxygen to the patient,” Dr. Mizuba explains. The pressure and oxygen changes result in reduced inflammation, accelerated recovery and up to 10 times greater stem-cell proliferation, among other benefits.
One memorable success story involved an 11-year-old soccer player diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the femoral head—a serious condition often leading to early hip replacement. The boy’s pain subsided during his treatment plan. Follow-up over two years showed restored blood supply and no further degeneration. Today, he runs cross-country and plays football, pain-free.
Dr. Mizuba emphasizes safety, expertise, and the importance of ensuring both the practitioner and equipment comply with national hyperbaric guidelines.
ESWT, another advanced tool, treats chronic soft-tissue injuries through acoustic shockwaves that trigger regeneration. Dr. Mizuba explains the premise of this therapy “is that it takes an old injury that would be considered chronic and pretty much washed up, and re-categorizes it into a category in the body that calls action to that particular area, propagating and initiating regeneration and restructuring of that tissue.”
Combining both therapies produces amazing results, Dr. Mizuba witnesses daily at his clinic. Conditions once considered chronic are now transformed into fully functional outcomes for his patients.
On Hawai‘i Island, where sunny days stretch across the seasons, fishing lines, paddles and golf clubs rarely rest. “With the weather being pleasant year-round,” Dr. Mizuba observes, “many individuals are able to stay active throughout the year.”
He notes with admiration that he has patients in their 90s who still paddle and walk nine holes of golf each week. “They’re looking for real answers, not gimmicks,” he emphasizes. “We are keeping people in the game—their game.”
Dr. Mizuba’s view of wellness extends beyond muscles and joints. He sees health as an interconnected system of mind, body and spirit. “We identify factors that are contributing to the increase in pain and overall loss of function,” he explains. “Understanding how those challenges are adversely affecting someone’s daily life is paramount for a successful care plan.”
His personal faith also anchors his work. “God put us here on this earth for a purpose,” he adds. “I hope that what we are doing helps each person achieve their mission in this life—to help them live each day a little fuller.”
Dr. Mizuba believes that health is not a sprint but a steady rhythm of faith, focus and movement forward. Whether you are a fisher launching at dawn, a grandparent paddling with your moʻopuna (grandchild), or a professional athlete recovering from injury, Dr. Mizuba’s practice offers the tools and inspiration to live fully—mind, body and spirit—immersed in aloha.
Beyond patient care, Dr. Mizuba teaches hyperbaric safety courses nationally, audits federally based health programs on the mainland and hopes to expand interdisciplinary collaboration locally. His goal is to bring advanced protocols from professional sports that everyone can benefit from.
As he looks to the future, Dr. Mizuba continues to pursue new certifications and mentor other health care providers—all for the betterment of individual lives. His mission remains steady. “One step at a time, one stroke at a time—all journeys begin with the power of one,” he reflects. “The journey to better health begins with baby steps. Each step that you take is a powerful statement.”
