Gateway Bank

Nurturing Dreams and Building Community

In a cozy conference room at Gateway Bank, I had the pleasure of sitting with five of the bank’s key associates in early December. Sitting at a table with Bruce Downey, bank president, John Schreier, CEO, Brian Maxwell, market president, Becky Durand, VP of business banking, and Gabrielle Peterson, marketing coordinator, it was quickly evident that this would not be a typical interview.

Before our discussion even began, a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose wafted through the room. The team welcomed me into the heart of a financial institution that has not only stood the test of time but has thrived in its commitment to the community, clients, and associates.

A Focus on Community

"Take care of our associates, take care of our clients, and take care of our community." These words from Bruce Downey, the president of Gateway Bank, echo the founding principles that have guided this institution since its inception in 2004. As the 20th-anniversary celebrations unfold, it's a testament to the journey that began with humble beginnings in a double-wide trailer, where Bruce Downey and John Schreier decided to forge their path in the banking world.

The decision to start Gateway Bank emerged from a desire to control destiny, a sentiment Bruce expressed as he left his previous role at Signal Bank. Over breakfast at a local Perkins restaurant, Bruce and John laid the foundation for what would become a haven for community-centric banking. Alongside them from the early days is Becky Durand, now in a business banker role, embodying the community touch that Gateway Bank is known for.

"Becky is the keeper of our culture," quipped Brian Maxwell, the Market President based in Edina. This light-hearted remark masks the underlying commitment to a unique culture that is practically Gateway's mantra. The philosophy, according to John, is simple: "Make the bank a great place to work, and it will be a great place to bank." It's this approach that fosters an open-door policy, not just for associates but also for clients.

"We're more than just a bank,” says John. “We know our clients.”

More than Financial Services – Helping Clients Achieve Their Dreams

Gateway Bank doesn't just offer financial services; it helps people realize their dreams. Whether it's a construction loan, a business loan, or a simple savings account, the offerings are as diverse as the dreams they support. "Old fashioned service with modern products," as Brian puts it, is the unique blend that defines the Gateway experience.

In a world where banking often feels transactional, Gateway Bank stands out, fostering relationships. When you bank with them, you engage with highly skilled, hard-working professionals dedicated to making client service a reality. Their focus on building and nurturing strong relationships extends beyond the bank's walls and into the community.

Gateway Gives, their community engagement program, encapsulates this spirit. From Adopt-A-Highway initiatives to participating in Back-to-School Drives that support local schools, Gateway Bank associates are deeply committed to making a difference.

As the 20th-anniversary celebrations unfold, Gateway Bank remains a steadfast pillar in the local landscape. The bank supports its clients and empowers its associates, giving each of them a paid day off annually to volunteer for a cause of their choice.

So, if you're seeking a bank that seamlessly blends old-fashioned service with modern conveniences, Gateway Bank is ready to welcome you. With convenient locations in Mendota Heights and Edina, they are not just a bank but a community-driven financial partner celebrating 20 years of excellence.
