Bicycles and coffee merge together for an unforgettable shopping experience at Local Cyclist

The term “cyclist” has the common misconception that if you’re not riding an expensive bike, or traveling hundreds of miles by pedal, you’re not a cyclist. The owners of Local Cyclist, located on Southwest Old Tualatin-Sherwood road, would deeply disagree. Simply owning a bike and using it, no matter the distance or the quality, makes you a cyclist.

Dustin Harder, the founding partner of Local Cyclist, avid cyclist and business entrepreneur, had the idea of opening up a shop that would contribute to the cycling community. Harder’s partners, Joe Holcomb, Stacey Daley and Ken McClenahan, have all been a part of the cycling community since they first learned to ride. Together, they offer more than 100 years of cycling experience, professionally and recreationally.

Holcomb, the Local Cyclist’s professional bike fitter, has been in the industry since he was 12. Starting as a BMX rider, Holcomb was soon recruited into the biking work field, assembling new bikes and starting his career as a bike mechanic in 1983. As a racer, Holcomb was always looking for a way to be faster. This led him into the profession of custom fitting, now looking at physical measurements of riders, pressure mapping, bio mechanics and conducting personal interviews to situate riders with their perfect fit. Holcolmb does these fittings in-store at a price of $350 for every aspect listed above as well as a minimum of two follow up meetings to ensure that everything is working smoothly or to make adjustments when needed.

Daley started her journey similarly to Holcomb, practically riding a bike before she could walk. “Riding a bike represented freedom to me,” said Daley. She soon emerged herself into the industry in 1999 at River City Bicycles. Her love for cycling has never waivered, but rather grown, manifesting into the opportunity to own a shop that can bring people the same joy and love she feels whenever she puts her foot to a pedal.

McClenahan oversees all major operations and construction at Local Cyclist, with the same love and passion for cycling as Daley and Holcomb. His career started with building bikes in their most basic form, to leading bike tours and eventually running the shop with his three other associates.

Local Cyclist started as an idea in 2024 and became a reality in physical form in January of 2026. The store itself offers big name brand bikes such as Specialized, Cervelo, Pinarello, Orbea and Seven, but any avid cyclist or newbie can bring in their bike for custom fitting, accessory add-ons, and can purchase equipment such as saddles, footwear, helmets, eyewear and clothing. Every worker at Local Cyclist partakes in cycling, which immediately certifies their customer service.

Everything that is offered at Local Cyclist is curated to the rider and are items that each employee would personally use. “There’s more to a bike than sitting on a seat and turning the pedals,” said Holcolmb. As the stores fitter, he takes intricate measurements of bike riders, assesses how they sit and move and what will work best for their body. There is an art to evaluating how someone rides a bike and Holcomb is the artist. “We offer the best fitting studio on the West Coast,” said Daley.

Local Cyclist’s fitting studio, mounted bikes on walls, and various options of gear to complete your experience is not the only special part about them. Their small but spacious building has its very own coffee bar, supported and supplied by Water Avenue Coffee. Quality Italian coffee is hard to come by but Local Cyclist offers you a freshly brewed cup with the addition of pastries from Musette Bakery.

Although Local Cyclist is a very new establishment, their long term goals are in their sideview mirror. They are wanting to expand their staff to continue their qualified status and offer additional help to customers who may need it. They are ambitious to open other locations similar to their current one in Tualatin, with a hopeful goal to help other underserved cyclist communities. They are starting a weekly group ride every Saturday led by Holcomb or other qualified staff on hand. Each ride is free and each route can be viewed beforehand on the Local Cyclist’s Instagram page or their Strava club, a social fitness app for cyclists and runners.

Every employee, aside from their work at Local Cyclist, has an active lifestyle in the cycling community. Harder has an amateur/adventure racing team that travels all over the world to run trails that professionals ride with locations in Italy and Hong Kong. Holcomb, Daley and McClenahan are all active on their own bikes, either joining Harder on his adventures or creating ones of their own. Their passion is endless.

“We don’t just want to sell you a bike,” said Daley. “We want to sell you a lifestyle.”

"When I think about what we are trying to do here it's not that we just want to sell you a bike, we want to sell you a lifestyle."
