When Jack Sheppard founded his garage door company in 1975, he may not have fully understood what it would grow into and how it would become a legacy for his entire family. Now over fifty years strong, the imprint of the Overhead Door Company of Augusta-Aiken can be found all over the CSRA, and customers keep coming back for more.
“We have many returning clients and builders who we work with every year,” says Abbie Garrett Baumann, Jack’s great-niece who serves as Office Manager. “We value relationships and loyalty, and we offer honest and reliable products and services. We care about our customers and builders and maintain our relationships with them.”
Overhead Door installs, repairs, and services residential and commercial overhead garage doors as well as openers and accessories that come with their products. In addition to offering over fifty years of local installation and service experience, the Overhead Door brand lends over 100 years of knowledge, product development, and expertise in the industry.
When Jack first started the company, garage door designs were limited, but the options are basically endless in today’s market. Styles range from utilitarian to elegant; completely solid to totally transparent. New smart technology also makes the doors easier to use than ever. “There are hundreds of door styles to choose from,” says Abbie. “Our main brand is the Overhead Door brand - the red ribbon logo, but we are dealers for five different manufacturers who all have different styles of doors to make sure we will have what the customer wants.”
The Overhead Door team works with customers to find the best fit for their home, business, and budget. Then, they follow up with installation by trained professionals and excellent customer service. “We give fair prices up front, so we don't need to do discounts because we already have the best price in the game,” Abbie explains. “We also try to treat others like we would like to be treated. If a customer calls back the next day after we have been there with a problem, we come back out.”
One of the most charming aspects of Overhead Door is that this family-run business encompasses not only Jack’s wife, Susan, and their children and grandchildren, but his sister, Jimmie Garrett, and her children and grandchildren, as well. Abbie says there are so many benefits of the Sheppard and Garrett families working together. “I get to see my dad every day and get a big hug in the mornings. I get to laugh and cut up with my uncle and work together on projects,” she shares. “I also get to work with my cousins, who I know well because we grew up playing together since my Nana and Uncle Jack live on the same property. We all get along and enjoy each other’s company.”
Today, Jack can look around his company and see the fruition of hard work and perseverance. He is encouraged by seeing his family working hard to continue the legacy. "I am excited, just tickled to death, that my family would follow in my footsteps. It makes me feel good,” shares Jack. “I have taken it as far as I can and it is up to the next generations to take it to the next level. I think it's in good hands."
