At Gervasi Vineyard Resort & Spa, the experience begins long before a glass is poured or a room key is handed over. The property invites guests into a sense of discovery, where every winding path, vineyard view, and thoughtfully designed space feels like part of a larger exploration. What lingers long after a visit is not only the beauty of the estate, but the people who have shaped it. Behind the atmosphere, the hospitality, and the feeling guests carry home are the women who have helped define Gervasi at every level.
For COO Gretchen Wendell, that understanding comes from experiencing the resort from the ground up. She began her career behind the bar and now oversees operations across the property. Her perspective is rooted in proximity to the guest experience and an understanding of how even the smallest moments can shape lasting memories.
“Employees who are guest-facing notice preferences and patterns of guests over time,” Gretchen said. “Often when you ask someone about a memorable experience anywhere, they want to describe how they felt.”
At Gervasi, hospitality is less about routine and more about anticipation. Every detail is intentionally designed to immerse guests in the moment and encourage them to slow down, wander, and experience the property through every sense.
“We are very intentional behind the scenes to create an environment where multiple senses are triggered at the same time,” Gretchen explained. “Is the atmosphere aesthetically beautiful? Is the lighting and music right? What do you smell? How are you greeted?”
That layered sensory approach creates something unique for every visitor. Walking into The Still House, guests are immediately met with the aroma of coffee and distillery mash, while music, lighting, and conversation create an atmosphere that feels both energetic and intimate. It is the kind of place where exploration happens naturally, whether that means discovering a new wine, lingering lakeside at sunset, or uncovering a favorite corner of the 55-acre Tuscan-inspired estate.
For Director of Hotel & Resort Operations Susan Montelone, the guest journey is equally personal. Originally hired as a host when the Bistro first opened, she has grown alongside the property, helping shape the culture that now defines the resort experience.
“A beautiful space may set the initial tone, but truly memorable experiences are built through meaningful moments that make each guest feel recognized, valued, understood, and personally cared for,” Montelone said.
That philosophy extends into every carefully considered detail, from heated tile floors in the Villas to the table settings at Olinda. Luxury at Gervasi is not rooted in excess, but in intention.
Behind it all is co-founder Linda Swaldo, whose original vision transformed a deteriorating barn into one of Canton’s most distinctive destinations.
“Standing there, I remember thinking, I hope we can restore this place into something people would actually want to come to,” Linda recalled. “My hope was that guests would see the charm and history in it.”
Today, that vision has become a destination defined by exploration, intention, and connection. Together, these women have shaped more than a resort. They have created a place that encourages guests to discover something new, linger a little longer, and return again.
