Ah, fall. The coziest season of all. Time to light some candles, sip some cider and relax before the hurried holiday season ensues. Alisa Popelka, owner of Alisa Cristine Interiors, says homeowners can take some simple steps to create the perfect cozy atmosphere.
“I prefer to take a ‘less-is-more’ approach with seasonal décor; it isn’t necessary to start from scratch when decorating for each season,” Alisa says. “I love adding subtle touches to my existing decor for each new season by focusing on a few design elements: layered neutrals, texture and jewel-toned hues mixed with earthy color tones.”
Alisa says texture is the most important element to bring coziness to a space. “Without texture, a room looks flat and lacks warmth. Adding textures creates visual interest- something you can see and feel. It makes a space look and feel finished and lived in.
“By layering chunky, woven throws and textured pillows and adding jewel-tone faux greenery and textiles, it instantly warms up your home,” she says. “Other great textures to incorporate are wood, leather, ceramics and stone. Use these in decor pieces such as vases, trays and baskets. I also invest in a new candle to bring in the fresh smells of the season. Think outside the box of the typical pumpkin candle and try earthy scents like tobacco, vanilla, fig, amber, clove and musk.”
