"The most valuable thing you wear isn’t your handbag, jewelry or shoes. It’s your skin," asserts Martha-Marie Edwards, Pure Glow Skin Refinery owner/esthetician. "Skin is our largest organ; it’s like a mirror reflecting what's going on inside the body. And we're definitely worth the investment in our skin care."
Martha-Marie says many people come to her, citing an issue with their skin. "Once we dive a little deeper, we discover the skin concern isn't the issue, but a symptom of the issue. For example, when someone comes with little white pustule-looking bumps around the forehead and cheeks, they think they have acne. What's actually going on is they have candida in their gut, which is a form of yeast. We need to work internally and externally to clear the bumps."
Another example is when a client comes in with dark circles under eyes, she says. "Once we rule out genetics or lack of hydration, many times we find it could be a form of adrenal fatigue, because our eyes are directly connected to our adrenaline system. Then we discuss different lifestyle changes to help correct the dark circles."
However, there are other benefits to investing in one's skin.
As we go through life, Martha-Marie says a person's skin goes through many different stages. "What you were able to use in your teens will more than likely not work for you in your 40s. The different hormonal phases of life mean we have to switch what we're doing to our skin, and that's different for each person. So having an esthetician by your side to help find the right regimen and treatments for each phase of life is vital."
She says when clients come to her Murfreesboro spa at 308 Uptown Square for facials on a regular basis, she sees their skin up close and personal. "I know my clients' skin and know when something new needs to be looked at deeper by a doctor. So many times I tell clients to have a dermatologist look at something, and they come back saying it definitely was something that needed to be taken care of. A few times now it has been cancer that we caught early."
"It’s just always good to have a second set of eyes looking at your skin and making sure everything is good," she adds.

"Not only does having glowing skin make us feel good, our skin is a helpful tool to know what's going on internally in our bodies."
