Give Thanks, One Stitch at a Time

Create a heartfelt seasonal keepsake with simple stitches, autumn colors and a meaningful message of gratitude.

Handmade embroidery has become popular again, bringing an old-fashioned craft into modern homes in a fresh, creative way. From personalized clothing and framed artwork to seasonal décor, embroidery offers a chance to slow down and create something meaningful by hand. This simple “Give Thanks” design is perfect for November, combining warm autumn colors, delicate florals and a heartfelt message of gratitude. Even better, it doesn’t require advanced skills to create something beautiful.

What You’ll Need

An embroidery hoop, white or cream cotton or linen fabric, embroidery floss in black, rust, orange, golden yellow, sage and deep green, an embroidery needle, small scissors, a washable fabric pen or transfer paper and a printed “Give Thanks” pattern featuring hands and fall-inspired greenery.

How to Make It

Begin by printing or drawing your design. Keep the hands and “Give Thanks” lettering in the center, leaving plenty of room around the top for branches, leaves and flowers. Transfer the design onto your fabric using a washable fabric pen, tracing lightly so the markings can easily be covered with thread.

Place the fabric inside the embroidery hoop and gently pull it taut. The fabric should feel firm and smooth without being overly stretched.

Thread your needle with black embroidery floss and begin with the central design. Use a simple backstitch to outline the hands and create the lettering. If you are new to embroidery, work slowly and use shorter stitches around curves to keep the lines smooth.

Next, add the greenery across the top. Use shades of sage and deep green to stitch stems and leaves, varying their sizes and directions for a natural, organic appearance. A basic straight stitch works beautifully for slender leaves.

Bring in the autumn color with rust, red and orange flowers. Use small straight stitches radiating outward to create petals, then add touches of golden yellow for tiny blooms and accents. Don’t worry about making every flower identical. Slight variations give handmade embroidery its charm.

Once your design is complete, carefully remove any visible transfer markings according to your pen’s instructions. Trim loose threads on the back and reposition the fabric so it sits evenly inside the hoop.

Display the finished piece directly in its wooden hoop on a shelf, gallery wall or Thanksgiving table. It also makes a thoughtful handmade hostess gift and a beautiful reminder that gratitude is always worth stitching into the season.
