For more than 2.5 years, 11-year-old Oceana Anders has been raising money to benefit local animal rescues. Her favorite organizations to donate to are AZ Happy Tails and Almost There Rescue, and over the years, she’s raised nearly $2,000.
Oceana shares that she learned about recycling cans from her parents and was inspired to donate to animal-based nonprofits in honor of her dog Smokey. With the help of the community—plus her parents, Nana, and sister Olympia—her ongoing effort is called Cans for Cool Canines.
“The community can help me by donating cans,” Oceana explains. “It means a lot to me that I get to help the animals I love.”
While Oceana loves giving back to the community by donating to animal shelters, she plans to be a historian when she grows up. She also gives back to the community through Girl Scouts.
To coordinate can donations, community members can search on Facebook for “Cans for Cool Canines” and message Oceana and her family on the page.

Top Three Things that make her happy
1. Family and Friends. She’d especially like to highlight her dog Smokey (he passed away), her dog P-nut, sister Olympia, Nana, and Papa and Grandma Wilma.
2. Animals. Dogs, of course!
3. Sports or crafts. She plays soccer and love projects.
