2021 is finally here! Over the past ten months, how many times have we heard someone say, “I can’t wait for 2020 to be over?” Never have people been so eager for a year to end. Well, our wish has been granted, and guess what? A new year didn’t instantly solve all of our problems.
Instead of wishing time away, let’s figure out how to make limoncello out of lemons—because this pandemic calls for something a bit stronger than lemonade. Here are four things you can do to start shifting your mindset in a more positive direction in 2021.
Let It Go
Write a list of ten frustrations you experienced in 2020. Then, crumble the list, rip it, burn it and let it go for good. We can’t change the past, so dwelling on it won’t help. Now, write a list of ten good things that happened in 2020. The act of remembering the good and writing it refocuses our mind on the positive moments from the past year. Read your list whenever bad thoughts about 2020 creep back in.
Jar of Joy
A gratitude jar is a great daily reminder to focus on the good in our lives. It doesn’t need to be fancy; an old mason jar or shoebox works well. Leave your gratitude jar in a prominent place. Leave small pieces of paper and a pen nearby and make a habit of writing something down that you’re grateful for every day. Whenever you need a pick-me-up, read through the notes in your jar.
Give Thanks
Expressing gratitude for others will lift your spirits and someone else’s. Resolve this year to send one letter, text or email every week to express appreciation for someone in your life. It will make you feel amazing and warm the heart of someone you value.

One of my greatest God-given gifts is an ability to find the good in almost any situation.
