New beginnings are in store at Ethically Crafted and Executive Director Desiree Johnson is leading the charge towards positive change. Previously known as Ten Thousand Villages, the fair-trade boutique in O’Bryonville is now rebranding with a new name that reflects the mission and message that is behind the products in the store.
Since Ten Thousand Villages has changed their business model to being online only, the physical store on Madison Road is now under another title, although the dedication to quality products is still the same.
“I think the name Ethically Crafted gives a better sense of what one might find in the store.” Desiree says. “The name emphasizes both the care that goes into the product being made and the care coming from the person purchasing the product.”
Inside the store, Ethically Crafted is bursting with color and artistry, from large baskets made of grass core and pieces of used saris, to tiny woven bracelets made up of hundreds of beads and expert embroidery. There are fabric figurines and garments featured throughout the shop, showcasing a variety of stitching and sewing styles that reflect the people and culture behind them.
Aside from handmade arts and goods, the store also offers items like Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate.
“There is actually a lot of child labor that goes into industries like coffee and chocolate,” Desiree explains. “For something to be fair trade means that not only are there no child workers, but those who are working also receive better treatment in an area that doesn't always provide the best of conditions.”
Although a fresh start is beginning for the store and its staff, they plan to branch out in the years to come and expand their participation in local markets and artisan fairs.
“We’d like to meet people where they’re at and allow them to recognize what we offer and how it makes an actual difference,” says Desiree. “Cincinnati is such a great place for markets and shows and the people here have the desire to help others.”
One example of life-changing success comes from Tamil Nadu, India, and the hard work of the Palam Rural Centre. For every bar of soap purchased with this organization, a child can be sent to school for a day, which is an opportunity they might not otherwise have.
In these areas, the chance to go to school opens more possibilities for these children. It can lead to higher paying jobs and chances to improve their way of living.
Personal stories like these empower and inspire Desiree to continue the work she first began under the Ten Thousand Villages name.
“Hearing about how businesses like this and the opportunities they provide are actually changing people’s lives makes it impossible not to care,” she says. “I heard of a woman in rural Bangladesh whose mother had passed away from malnutrition. Through forming a rope and twine company, she made so much change for her family that her daughters went on to hold leadership positions. It’s incredible how helpful this can be for women and children who need it.”
Behind this purposeful storefront, every piece of master craftwork supports a cause and allows an experience that both artisans and shoppers can feel good about.
