St. Louis is a natural place for the perfect sunset. Pack a picnic basket, a blanket and chairs and you are set for a spectacular evening. Or maybe grab your sunglasses if you’re headed downtown. Any way you choose, watching the sun set is a relaxing way to wind down the evening.
If you’re headed downtown, there is nothing more magical than watching the Cardinals play at Busch Stadium while the sun sets. If you’re lucky, the Cardinals win and the sun set is stunning. The rooftop bar at 360 St. Louis is another fun place. The people watching is sublime, the drinks cool and crisp and the sun set from atop of Broadway is as good as it gets. If you’re downtown remember to swing by the Arch for a look at the setting sun.
Forest Park offers many views and places for a sunset picnic. Try sitting at the top of Art Hill on a pretty St. Louis evening or walking to the World’s Fair Pavilion. The Muny is a perfect place to settle in after a picnic in their courtyard offering an evening that begins with a warm sunset. The bike trail encourages an exploration of many different views.
Shaw Park in Clayton is an oasis for families and couples. It’s well kept grounds and various playgrounds invite sunset viewing while enjoying a bottle of French rose from the Wine and cheese Place on Forsythe suggests Aaron Zwicker.
Many a summer night can be spent at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in the lawn seats; always filled with fun and interesting people. Grab a picnic, bug spray (check for rules) and rent a chair. Meet your neighbors before the warm up begins and enjoy the St. Louis sunset as the music begins.
In Chesterfield Valley, check out the Monarch Chesterfield Levee Trail. Riding a bike into the sunset or walking along either trail (behind Walmart or by the ballfields) merits a gorgeous view of the western sun setting. The Greenway crosses over the Missouri River to connect to both the Katy Trail and Busch Greenway. Pull off for a picnic along the trail which offers unobstructed views of sunset.
Chesterfield Amphitheatre with its cascading steps allows for beautiful views of the sunset. Take in a free concert (check website) or enjoy the quiet. And remember the trail behind that boasts a lake and places to picnic and cuddle.
Off the beaten track check out the Compton Hill Water Tower Located in the Compton Hill Reservoir Park at Grand and Russell Avenues. The tower stands 179 feet high and open for tours every Saturday from April to November. However, swing by with a picnic. Walking up the steps to the reservoir admire the solitude of the park and the beauty of the art. When you reach the top, turn west. And know that there is nothing as spectacular as a St. Louis sunset.
