When Carla Thomas’ son left for prep school in August, she had an opportunity to refresh his bedroom, opening it up for the occasional houseguest.
“Completely redoing the space was just not feasible, and I didn’t want my son to feel disconnected to his own room when he is home on holiday,” says Carla, an interior designer and owner of SPACES by Studio C.
So she kept most of her son’s furnishings and art and worked on boosting the sophistication factor.
“New bedding, paint and drapes in warm tones of taupe and gray did the trick," Carla says. "I added new lamps of veined white marble and jewel-tone pillows to add contrast to the room."
A well-appointed guest room is a way of instantly welcoming guests and should be a reflection of your lifestyle and hospitality, she says. Comfort is key, so choose your best bedding, using high thread count paired with luxurious comforter and pillows, along with an extra, lighter blanket for naps and reading.
“As a frequent houseguest myself, I really appreciate when my host has the room made up with fresh linens, flowers and a few added comforts of home,” Carla says. “It makes me feel as if they are as happy to have me as I am to be there. I hope my own guests feel special when they open the guest room door and see that it was prepared with their comfort in mind.”
Guest Room Tips
• We all rest better in rooms painted in soothing colors. Try Shitake Mushroom by Benjamin Moore. It is a warmer and more sophisticated shade of gray that has been so popular in the last few years.
• Pay attention to your window treatments. A lined curtain mounted close to the wall will ensure less light coming into the room early in the morning.
• And lastly, do not forget the closet! Make sure it is uncluttered and stocked with enough empty hangers for your houseguests.
