Even men can appreciate a quality accessory that is well crafted, fashionable and functional. In pursuing a story on handbags (or purses or pocketbooks), I visited Brighton in the Shops in Farmington Valley to gain some insight.
Lucia Barstow, the store's assistant manager, welcomed me and heard about my quest to find a local retailer who could be counted on to help fill the many, many (many) needs of accessories for the modern-day woman.
After an overview of several lines in the store, what stood out most is the quality details and functionality all of the bags had. Although Brighton is a national chain retailer, it felt more like a locally owned boutique store.
This hometown vibe was amplified when I was told about the Handbag trade-in held annually. Patrons can bring in gently used bags to donate to local charity, Dressed for Success in Hartford, who in turn distributes them to women going back into the workforce after hard times. In return donors receive a $25 or $50 credit towards purchasing a new bag.
One of the lines that stood out was the Pretty Tough Collection by Maricela Palacios. The line included a textured (pebbled) leather bag with studs that seemed to resemble an old motorcycle jacket.
Their “most loved” bag are the quilted Heart Beat Collection Handbags because they are lightweight and have lots of pockets for today’s modern mom. You can even get the bag personally embroidered. They make traveling easy, with a place to slide over a luggage handle and the ability to hold items such as passports and phone chargers.
There are lots of other places to buy a handbag, but it's hard to pass up the great customer service and well-educated staff here at the Shops in Farmington Valley.
