Healing Through Therapy

A guide to self-awareness, coping skills, and starting fresh in the new year.

Understanding our emotional and psychological well-being is central to living a fulfilled life, and for many, therapy is the key to unlocking that understanding. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Brooke Madl, a therapist at Unlatched Mind Counseling and Wellness, brings a compassionate and solution-focused approach to supporting individuals and families through life’s challenges.

Her fascination with human psychology began in childhood, during a tumultuous period she now reflects on as formative. “I wanted to understand the why behind the decisions and behaviors that shaped my early life,” she explains. That curiosity guided her education and led her to become a Licensed Master Social Worker in 2022. After completing her clinical hours in a psychiatric hospital, she transitioned to private practice, allowing her to work more deeply and personally with clients of all ages.

The practice spans a wide spectrum: supporting children, teens, and adults dealing with anxiety, depression, postpartum struggles, trauma, and more complex diagnoses like Borderline Personality Disorder. “The common thread in my work is helping people understand themselves more deeply, navigate their emotional worlds, and find relief, resilience, and empowerment,” she says.

Her therapeutic approach blends solution-focused techniques with systems theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). This combination allows her to guide clients in recognizing and reshaping unhelpful thought patterns, regulating emotions, improving relationships, and building practical coping skills. For some, sessions take place in the traditional office setting; for others, she offers walk-and-talk therapy or even casual meetings at Starbucks to create a relaxed, approachable environment.

Therapy, she emphasizes, is not just for crisis moments. “It’s for anyone open to self-reflection, personal growth, and learning new ways to navigate emotions or relationships,” she says. Even subtle signs, persistent irritability, emotional overwhelm, racing thoughts, tension, or changes in sleep, can indicate that support would be helpful.

The impact of therapy extends beyond symptoms. She shares stories of clients who, over time, have transformed their relationships, strengthened self-awareness, and gained confidence. “Clients learn to not just survive their experiences, but to grow from them,” she says.

As we enter a new year, Brooke encourages readers to start fresh with intentional goals, small mindfulness practices, and emotional decluttering. “Even tiny pauses in our day can create clarity and reduce overwhelm,” she notes. Most importantly, she emphasizes the power of connection, seeking support, nurturing relationships, and not hesitating to reach out for help.

For those in the community seeking guidance, the practice is currently accepting new clients. “I offer a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore, grow, and feel more aligned with your life,” she says. Her hope is that through her work, the ripple effects of emotional health can extend throughout families, relationships, and the wider community.
