Helping Our Neighbors Is Stabilizing Families Across Texas

Cornerstone NCT Blends Financial Help, Mentoring, and Community Events to Prevent Homelessness Locally

In Prosper and surrounding communities, Cornerstone Assistance Network NCT is quietly changing outcomes for families facing financial strain.

“We empower our neighbors in need through relationships and comprehensive services,” says Elizabeth Johnston, Senior Director of Growth and Advancement.

The nonprofit partners with families in crisis, helping pay monthly utility bills while providing life coaching that builds long-term stability. “By listening and identifying the root cause, we personalize solutions and hold people accountable for improving their lives,” says Elizabeth. On average, families are in the program for about four months and receive roughly $1,500 in support.

Cornerstone also supports children through two hallmark programs: Back to School Bash and Cornerstone Christmas. “When families struggle, kids’ needs are often missed, so we step in to help with dignity and fun,” says Elizabeth. Each year, hundreds of children receive backpacks, school supplies, new shoes, and a complete Christmas including gifts, stockings, food, and a warm hoodie.

Founded after local leader Jennifer Lutes felt called to act, the organization adopted a holistic model that addresses causes, not just symptoms. Today, it serves Prosper, McKinney, Celina, Frisco, Gunter, and Aubrey, supporting both blue-collar workers and executives alike. “Struggle knows no bias,” adds Elizabeth.

Community support powers the mission through volunteers, donations, and partnerships. This August, the Annual Cornerstone Golf Tournament at Fields Ranch– Omni PGA Frisco invites sponsors and players to fund the financial assistance program while enjoying a premier course experience. “Events like our tournament rally the community and directly support families working toward self-sufficiency,” says Elizabeth.

For residents looking to help, opportunities range from mentoring families to hosting supply drives and volunteering at seasonal events. “Compassion, consistency, and a willingness to listen can change a trajectory,” shares Elizabeth.

Cornerstone pairs immediate relief with practical coaching to help families avoid repeat crises, stay housed, and rebuild independence. As a result, children walk into school more confident and prepared, helping create stronger, more stable communities across North Texas over time.
