What are some holiday décor trends you are seeing?

Holiday design should be personal and have meaning to each family. Traditional and retro/nostalgic décor is still popular, especially with the increased emphasis on home and family.

We are also seeing more modern monochromatic décor with silver and gold, mixed metals being very attractive elements, lending themselves to that wintry and cozy feeling.

Another trend gaining in popularity due to technology and increased importance of inclusion, is the “anything goes” décor: rainbow trees and vibrant colors that give an immediate festive feel.

What is the best advice you can give to a homeowner decorating their house for the holidays?

Embrace your own tastes and budget. If you like a more rustic holiday décor, or eco/earth-friendly approach, such as reaching into old glassware that has been in the family for years or generations. Bring out the old and transform it into something new. Don’t worry about what is trending and make your style the trend. If you prefer to go all out and go big for the holidays, go for it. If you prefer to stay small and charming, that’s great. There’s so much inspiration and resources. Mix, match, and have fun! Everyone is a designer and has their own natural ability, so grab those items, either old or new, and start playing around with them until an idea comes to life! Whether you decorate with family and friends or hire designers to create the look you desire, there’s something for everyone.

Do you have any tricks to make holiday décor more festive without breaking the bank?

Repurpose! You might have a gem already that just needs a new look. It’s amazing what some ribbon or paint can do to transform an item—if you have a wreath that needs new life, maybe paint it gold, add some fresh ribbon or new lights and ornaments.

With the prices of LED lights down and the availability of them in big box stores, they are a fun way to add that festive feel inside and outside of your home. You don’t always need new, sometimes just a new purpose.

If a homeowner splurges on one holiday décor item, what should it be?

Something that brings you joy, something that will be visible throughout the holiday and continue to bring you joy-such as a custom wreath or customized family sign or photo. Or splurge on items you look forward to having year after year. Make this item the focal point, whether large or small. When you walk into your home, it should be seen and bring a smile to your face. Save on the trendy items that are only for this year.

What is the best holiday entertaining décor item that will be a showstopper?

A great focal point: the tree, a fireplace or hearth, the front door or entryway, or perhaps a stunning staircase. Decide what your focal point is, and that is your showstopper.

Anything else you’d like to add?

For me, when I walk into a home and see personal design choices, I beam knowing what went into the choices and love to question them as everyone has a story behind their choice. There are so many styles out there, and personality makes them unique, so remember that whatever you design or place in your home should be something that brings joy, makes your home cheery, and has that personal added style. Whether grand or lowkey, the placement of décor is key so that everyone who enters your home can experience the design and gain the same excitement as you do for the holiday season.

Designer tip: command strips, command hooks, and assorted zip ties are very helpful. Plan ahead and enjoy!
