Decorating For "Where Life Happens"

As an accomplished interior designer, it's a sure bet Deborah Bettcher's work days are never quite the same. This West Chester-based professional helps people through life's transitions. No doubt, this year presented her clients with plenty of transformations -- and Deb was pleased to guide them to creative solutions that offer comfort and flexibility.

“Our homes have always important, but now, they're where we're actually living -- where life is happening -- rather than places where we stop at to eat and sleep," she says.

As an interior designer for the past 12 years, Deb applies the core, artistic principles of composition:  balance, composition, scale, emphasis, harmony and rhythm to her work. "You know that feeling you get when you walk into a room and it just feels right? It takes a lot of preparation to make everything work beautifully and in that right way," she explains.

First, proper distribution of objects and elements in a room creates equilibrium and provides an overall balance, says Deb, who adds that balance can be achieved in intentionally symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial manners to better suit the personalities, requirements and sensibilities of clients.

Proportion focuses on how all of the furnishings, such as furniture, lighting, artwork, area rugs and window treatments, relate to each other and the space in which they are being used. Deb says distributing size, color, shape and texture of various design elements creates harmony and rhythm, which is pleasing to the eye and soothing to the soul.

"Often my clients are moving to homes with a different scale, whether upsizing or downsizing, and it takes careful planning to decide what pieces to keep or to add to coordinate the decor," Deb says.

She says the pandemic certainly has affected people's views of their residences by redefining what emotional support and functionality they want from their homes. "Not only are we re-evaluating how we want rooms to function, we're appreciating the the value of this place we call 'home' as a safe haven in these changing times."

Deb serves clients throughout Chester County and Delaware County, and is happy to provide virtual or in-home consultations.
