Every year, the tranquil streets of Plano transform into a magical wonderland, thanks to the spirited efforts of resident Carl Triggs. Known fondly as the “head elf” of holiday cheer, Carl’s over-the-top Christmas display at 3601 Brookshire Drive has become a cherished tradition for families near and far. But what drives this festive spectacle, and how does it spread joy throughout the community?

“I love to see the joy in everyone’s faces, young and old,” Carl beams, his eyes twinkling with holiday spirit. “As the sign over the walk says, ‘Christmas—Where children still believe in magic.’”

And believe me, they do! Carl’s display captivates countless visitors, featuring characters from beloved cartoons like Blue’s Clues, Minions and Frozen, as well as iconic films such as Elf, Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz. It’s a delightful fusion of tradition and whimsy, with each scene carefully orchestrated in a dazzling tableau that invites the imagination to frolic.

This heartwarming journey into festive joy began in 1998, coinciding with the birth of Carl’s first two grandchildren and the last of their five children leaving the nest, marking a new chapter for the family.

What truly sets Carl’s display apart is the heartfelt family connection behind it. Each year, all of the children and grandchildren lend a hand in putting together the display, making it a beloved family tradition. “The excitement and harmony when they help decorate, hand out candy canes, or count Olafs—it’s pure magic,” Carl says, referencing the nearly 1,800 candy canes he distributed last year alone. Among the family helpers is granddaughter Ashton, who is pictured assisting Carl in creating new stockings to hang over the fireplace. Together, they infuse the season with love and creativity, adding personal touches to their winter wonderland.

His granddaughter Averly sums it up perfectly: “I was disappointed when I visited the iconic Macy’s Santaland in New York City because I’ve grown up with my grandparents’ extravagant decorations. I guess my expectations were too high!” Her playful suggestion? “They should hire Papa to help them make it more engaging.”

The planning for this enchanting display starts in October, with Carl putting up an astonishing 30,000 lights throughout his yard. November is dedicated to assembling the individual scenes, with every piece strategically placed according to a master diagram. It’s a labor of love that takes two months but results in a spectacle that delights the community. “At the first sign of garland enclosing the yard, I have walkers, joggers, and moms out for a stroll stopping by to talk about this year’s attractions,” Carl shares. Even the local school bus makes a detour just to let the kids gawk at the display’s progress!

Inside their home, Carl’s wife, Barbara, crafts an equally captivating indoor wonderland. With a flair for thrifting, she spends weekends scouring shops across Texas for unique finds. “We can leave for a day and come home with three or four new scenes to add to the display,” Carl laughs, noting that he’s running out of room to showcase all their treasures. At one point, they even had a themed Christmas tree for every window!

As the holiday season approaches, Carl sets up a special mailbox for children to write letters to Santa—available in both English and Spanish. Last year, he joyfully replied to 75 letters from the North Pole, even hand-delivering some on Christmas Eve so children could find them on Christmas morning. “I love talking with the neighbors and watching them find the hidden gems throughout the display,” he says, embodying the spirit of connection that is the heart of this holiday tradition.

The display has become a celebration of love, laughter, and a shared belief in the magic of the season. So, as the garlands twinkle and the lights shimmer on Brookshire Drive, remember this: Carl Triggs isn’t just creating a holiday display; he’s crafting a legacy of joy, one candy cane and enchanting scene at a time.

This Christmas, take a stroll down his magical lane and discover the wonder that brings the community together—because in Plano, the spirit of Christmas truly comes alive!

Carl Triggs’ enchanting Christmas display gained widespread recognition when it was featured in the 2017 viral video “Christmas Stereotypes” by YouTube celebrities Dude Perfect. This unexpected spotlight solidified Carl’s display as a beloved holiday destination in the Plano community.
