Home Beyond Walls: Lakeway Christian Community Resale Barn

A Thrift Store Provides The Community A Haven Of Hope And Belonging

In Grayson County, Texas, the Lakeway Christian Community Resale Barn stands as a beacon of hope and home. Under the insightful guidance of Kris Reeves and a dedicated board of directors, this unique thrift store transcends its basic function, offering a myriad of services that reinforce the sense of home and community.

The Resale Barn, established in 1996, began with a noble mission of neighbors helping neighbors. Its evolution into a sanctuary for those in need has been remarkable. Beyond the obvious financial assistance with rent, utilities, and prescriptions, the Barn's contribution of over $6 million, and $480,000 last year alone, is a testament to its commitment to sustain the security and warmth of a home for those in crisis.

Central to its mission is the 'Hope Through Grace' program, which offers extended support to individuals battling health crises, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy or in hospice care, who do not have the financial stability or means to cover basic living expenses. This program ensures that their homes remain a place of solace and comfort during their most trying times, and most importantly that they feel the love and hope of the community.

The Resale Barn is more than a place for financial assistance; it's a shopping destination where every item, from clothing to furniture, carries the potential to turn a house into a home. These items, each holding a story, are priced to maintain the balance between affordability for shoppers and funding the operations of the Barn. The pricing strategy is thoughtful, ensuring that essential goods are accessible while also generating necessary revenue for its community services. The recent expansion of the Resale Barn's facility to 12,000 square feet is not just a physical growth; it symbolizes a deeper commitment to the community. This expansion allows for a broader range of merchandise, enhancing the Barn's capacity to support more people. Celebrated with a grand re-opening event, it marked a new chapter in the Barn's journey of community service.

Furthermore, the Resale Barn's impact extends beyond Grayson County. In times of natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina and the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, the Barn has been a pivotal force in rallying community support and providing aid. From collecting and delivering necessities like water and bath towels to financially assisting in funeral costs for victims, their reach in times of crisis is profound.

Operating solely on sales and donations, the Resale Barn is a model of self-sustainability. This financial model ensures that every penny spent or donated directly impacts those in need. And while they have a paid staff of about 23 individuals, Kris does not take a salary to ensure the mission is fulfilled every day.  The community's trust in the Barn is reflected in their generous support, be it through donations or shopping at the store.

Lakeway Christian Community Resale Barn is more than a thrift store; it's a cornerstone of the community. It represents a place of hope, support, and the essence of home. Through its multifaceted programs and compassionate approach, the Barn continues to weave a tapestry of belonging, ensuring that everyone in Grayson County and beyond has a place to call home.
