Spring has nearly sprung and for many valley residents, they are taking stock of some spring-cleaning options and maybe some items that need to be repaired around the house. Among those things that often get neglected are the condition of your windows and doors, but they are some of the most structurally important to the home. The team at Grizzly Windows and Doors visited with Gilbert City Lifestyle to give us a few pointers on one of the most overlooked parts of our home - Our Windows.

Grizzly Windows and Doors is a company specializing in the installation of windows and doors. It focuses on high-quality craftsmanship and offers a range of products including all-wood, wood-clad, aluminum, fiberglass, and vinyl windows.  Window and door installations are a craft where quality material selection and meticulous care converge. Daniel Papp, Mario Trujillo, and Michael Collier are the craftsmen of this mission at Grizzly, ensuring that every frame installed by Grizzly Windows and Doors is not only a barrier against the elements but a gateway to a better quality of life for individuals in their homes and businesses.

According to Daniel Papp, founder of Grizzly, your windows and doors should ideally be replaced every 10 to 15 years, but the timeframe can depend on the circumstances. “Different materials have different lifespans,” according to Papp. “For example, vinyl and fiberglass tend to last longer than wood framed windows in certain climates due to their resistance to weathering and decay.”

Papp also shares these other factors including:

  • Environmental Factors: Harsh weather conditions, like extreme heat, cold, or coastal air, can shorten the lifespan of windows and doors.

  • Quality of Installation: Proper installation plays a significant role in the longevity of windows and doors. Poorly installed windows may need to be replaced sooner.

  • Window and Door Condition: Signs like drafts, difficulty in operation, condensation between panes, or visible damage are indicators that it might be time to consider replacement.

  • Energy Efficiency Concerns: Older windows and doors may not be as energy efficient as modern designs. Replacing them with energy-efficient models can improve home comfort and reduce energy bills.

  • Aesthetic and Home Value: Homeowners may also choose to replace windows and doors for aesthetic reasons or to increase property value, even if the existing ones are still functional. Regular maintenance can extend the life of windows and doors, but if they start to show signs of wear or aren’t performing as expected, it may be time to consider replacement.

Papp stresses also there are several things you can do in your home to extend the life of your windows and doors. “Regular cleaning is crucial for maintaining the integrity and appearance of windows,” shares Papp. “This is especially important in areas like Arizona where dust and sand can accumulate on surfaces. Regular cleaning prevents buildup that can lead to damage over time.”

Other important things to remember when it comes to proper maintenance of your doors and windows include:

  • Proper Selection of Cleaning Products

  • Maintenance of Window Seals

  • Inspection for Damage

  • Proper Installation and Repair

  • Regular inspection for Water Damage

  • Proper Ventilation
