Hooray! Pi(e) Day!

3.14 Pi Bar Satiates Springs’ Sweet and Savory Tooth(s)

Pi Day commemorates the mathematical constant π (pi), which represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is the number 3.141592653… and never ends. Pi Day is observed annually on March 14th (3.14). March 14, 2015, at 9:26:53 a.m. was called Super Pi Day, achieving the first ten digits of the transcendental number.

This arithmetical affair is frequently celebrated with its homophone, pie — which, coincidentally, is served circular — and what better way to celebrate in the Centennial State than with the Best Pie in Colorado?

Black Bottom Bourbon Pecan

Last year, just before Thanksgiving, Colorado Springs’ 3.14 Pi Bar was voted Best Pie in Colorado by Good Morning America’s United States of Pie competition.

With their Black Bottom Bourbon Pecan, 3.14 Pi Bar went to The Big Apple to compete nationally against pies from Chicago, Boston and Tampa — and meet both Super Bowl champion Michael Strahan and the “Godmother of Soul,” Patti LaBelle.

“It was a crazy time leading into Thanksgiving, but they really made it a great experience,” says Becca Boudreaux, one of three proprietors of 3.14 Pi Bar. “We were in New York for less than 24 hours because we had to get back to the Springs and back to baking. It was a whirlwind, but we had a blast.”

The other pair of owners are Boudreaux’s partner Don and future-son-law, Mackenzie.

“Don and I bring business ownership and management experience, while Mackenzie has spent years in kitchens,” she explains.

Myriad Local Offerings

3.14 Pi Bar offers both handcrafted sweet pies and hot, savory pot pies — along with sandwiches, salads, craft cocktails, local coffee and Colorado beers.

“We carry Blackhat Distillery products, Axe and the Oak, 300 Days of Shine and more,” boasts Boudreaux. “Our coffee is Humble, our tea is out of Evergreen, and all our beers are from Colorado. We really try to support local, small businesses. I think it's imperative as a small business ourselves.”

Whether seasonal or menu mainstays, 3.14 offers traditional pie options — Key Lime, cherry, blueberry, pumpkin, apple and strawberry-rhubarb — along with some unique flavors, such as Nutella Italian Silk and the reigning Best Pie in Colorado: Black Bottom Bourbon Pecan.

“Our guests love our variety of sweet pies. My favorite is the Nutty Professor, a peanut butter mousse on Oreo cookie crust, topped with whipped cream and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup crumbles,” confesses Boudreaux.

Patrons have plenty of hot pot pies to pick from as well, from Irish stew to chicken & mushroom and Mojo Cuban pork. “Our turkey, cranberry and brie pot pie is a great spin on traditional Thanksgiving fare. It’s a little sweeter of a savory pie.”

Stay Tuned

3.14 Pi Bar saluted Pi Day last year with specials for $3.14, including limited releases of Cutie Pies, their small pies. What’s in store for March 14th this year? You’ll have to keep an eye out on social media to see what deals that Tuesday will bring.

“We’ll be partnering with Wackadoo Brewing, our neighbor three doors down,” teases Boudreaux.
