How FYZICAL Therapy Redefines Local Care

How Alan Howell's Leading Local Care With Expertise And Heart

When we talk about "loving local," our minds often go straight to shopping at local businesses, dining at neighborhood restaurants, or supporting local artisans. But Alan J. Howell, the owner of FYZICAL Therapy & Balance in Pleasant Ridge, expands the idea of loving local to include the healthcare and wellness providers that keep our communities moving—literally.

With more than 30 years of experience, Howell’s impressive credentials include serving as head athletic trainer for the USA Olympic swim and water polo teams and being inducted into three halls of fame for his achievements in lacrosse. His clinic, FYZICAL Therapy & Balance, offers a science-backed, patient-centered approach to physical therapy that’s anything but ordinary. I sat down with Howell to learn more about his work, his passion for the community, and how FYZICAL is redefining health and wellness in Pleasant Ridge.

Heather: FYZICAL is known for its unique balance protocols and medically based approach. Can you elaborate on what sets FYZICAL apart from other physical therapy providers?

Alan: We’re different because of the level of training and certification our team undergoes. Every member of our team has completed all three levels of certification—from basic balance to more complex issues like concussions and auditory problems. This means we can handle a wide range of conditions, from orthopedic injuries to neurological and vestibular disorders. Our mission is to help people get back to living the life they love, safely and effectively.

H: FYZICAL focuses on orthopedic, neurologic, and geriatric disorders. How do you tailor treatments to meet the diverse needs of these patient populations?

A: We take a highly individualized approach. For older adults, that might mean more focus on balance and fall prevention, while for athletes, it’s about getting them back to peak performance. We don’t do one-size-fits-all care—we take the time to understand what brought the patient in and where they want to go.

H: Your work as head athletic trainer for the USA Olympic teams is impressive. How has that experience influenced your approach to physical therapy and the way you run your clinic today?

A: Working with Olympic athletes taught me the importance of precision and timing. These athletes train their whole lives for one event, so the pressure to get them ready is immense. That experience has shaped how I approach every patient—whether it’s helping someone walk without pain or preparing an athlete for competition, we make sure they’re ready when they need to be.

H: As a member of the Ohio Government Affairs Committee, you’ve been involved in passing important healthcare bills. Can you share an example of legislation you’ve worked on and how it impacts the physical therapy field?

A: One of the most impactful bills we worked on was for direct access to physical therapy. Now, patients in Ohio can see a physical therapist without a physician’s referral, which means faster care. Another big win was the fair co-pay bill, which ensures that physical therapy visits are priced on par with primary care visits. This makes therapy more accessible and reduces reliance on pain medications.

H: What new initiatives or trends do you see shaping the future of physical therapy?

A: We’re seeing exciting advancements in technology, like devices that help paraplegics regain mobility. Laser therapy is also being explored for new applications, including managing chronic conditions. At FYZICAL, we’re committed to staying ahead of these trends so we can continue offering the best care possible!

Howell’s vision for the future underscores his dedication to innovation and his belief that physical therapy is more than just treatment—it’s about empowering people to live their best lives.
