How New York Style Jazz Came to Woodstock

Meet Peter Ponzol

Reeves House once again features an extraordinary musician who happens to live in Woodstock: Meet Peter Ponzol, a globally acclaimed jazz and studio musician with a decades-long career. He’s performed alongside esteemed musicians such as Monty Alexander, Chick Corea, and Elvin Jones, to name a few. Ponzol spent 10 years in New York City, where he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Performance Grant.

Ponzol dedicated his entire career to supporting not only this unique original American art form, but also providing musicians worldwide with the best possible setups. He is renowned for both his musical prowess and his skill in crafting his own top-tier saxophone mouthpieces. Some of the world’s most prestigious saxophone manufacturers in France, Germany and Taiwan have used Ponzol’s expertise to design their professional instruments. His name and knowledge of the instrument are legendary in the musical industry.

The life of an internationally recognized jazz musician involves a lot of travel. During his worldly career, he lived in Germany for 13 years. In 2005 Ponzol and his wife searched for a relaxing place to call home. They found it in Woodstock. They were captivated by the small town charm, natural beauty, and convenient location near Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. To recharge, the mountains and the ocean are within easy reach. And then there was Hot Dog Heaven. Woodstock longtime residents will remember this lovable little joint on Main Street with the best hot dogs.

Woodstock has come a long way and is now an unparalleled arts destination. The Reeves House Visual Arts Center at Woodstock Arts creates a fantastic jazz-club ambiance on the back lawn.

Ponzol’s performance covers a broad spectrum of jazz. He is always a very original, stylish, and creative player, considering communication with the audience as one of the most important parts of every performance. This special concert offers the audience the opportunity to hear this original American art form performed with an intensity and beauty rarely heard today.

See Ponzol live on September 27  from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Woodstock Arts’ Jazz Night. Ponzol will be joined by three of the best jazz players from the Atlanta area: Louis Herivaux - Keyboard; Neal Starkey - Bass and Dave Potter - drums.
