Native Las Vegans Imagine Dragons are considered one of the most successful and best-selling music artists on the planet. The American alternative-rock band has sold more than 74 million albums and 65 million digital songs globally. They have also sold more than 160 billion streams across music platforms. Imagine Dragons has won a Grammy Award, an MTV Video Music Award, three American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, and one World Music Award. But beyond their musical achievements, they still find time for Las Vegas and its children.
In 2013, Imagine Dragons founded the Tyler Robinson Foundation (TRF, trf.org) in memory of Tyler Robinson, a young fan whose battle with cancer and admirable spirit left an indelible mark on the band. The foundation stands out not only for its mission–to provide both financial and emotional support to families affected by pediatric cancer, ensuring they do not face their struggles alone–but also for the heartfelt, hands-on involvement of its founders.
When Imagine Dragons met Tyler Robinson, they were deeply inspired by the teenager’s resilience in the face of cancer. In return, Tyler found strength in the band’s music, particularly their hit song "It's Time." His story and his positive outlook, even during the toughest times, moved the band members profoundly. Tragically, Tyler passed away in 2013. His legacy lives on through TRF.
Jennifer Carleton, chair of the board of directors for TRF, emphasizes the importance of their tagline "Stronger Family Together." This phrase encapsulates the foundation's core belief that families are the cornerstone of a child's fight against cancer. "Beyond financial assistance, TRF aims to offer emotional and psychological support, helping families maintain a sense of normalcy and strength," Jennifer explains. “Through counseling services, family retreats, and support groups, TRF creates a nurturing environment where families can connect and find solace.”
But what makes this organization even more unique is how Imagine Dragons goes above and beyond to engage with pediatric cancer patients and their families. The band’s involvement is not limited to public appearances or fundraising events. They create unforgettable experiences and actively participate in the charity’s initiatives, often visiting hospitals, providing exclusive concert tickets, engaging in backstage meet-and-greets, and delivering personalized video messages. These interactions bring immense joy and inspiration to young patients and their families.
Dan Reynolds, lead vocalist of Imagine Dragons, shares his heartfelt connection to the non-profit organization: “The work of the Tyler Robinson Foundation is incredibly close to my heart. Seeing the courage and resilience of these young fighters and their families is a constant reminder of the power of love and community. TRF is more than a foundation; it’s a family, and we’re committed to standing by these families every step of the way."
The foundation also prides itself on strategic partnerships that enhance its ability to support pediatric cancer families. By collaborating with hospitals, research institutions, and other nonprofits, TRF can provide comprehensive support that includes cutting-edge treatments, clinical trials, and holistic care. These partnerships extend the reach and impact of the foundation’s work, ensuring families receive the best possible support during their challenging journey. Through direct grants and partnerships, TRF has served more than 500 Nevada families in the past decade. Notable contributions come from local initiatives, such as the students of The Alexander Dawson School, who used their school's 3D printer to create and sell items to raise funds for TRF. Their efforts generated significant financial support and inspired their peers and the local community to get involved with the organization.
Furthermore, to ensure access to quality care and resources, TRF’s Family Liaison Azalea Sanchez aids families impacted by a pediatric cancer diagnosis. She has nearly a decade of experience as a cancer mom, is a former grant recipient, and is passionate about raising awareness, advocating for the pediatric oncology community, and assisting families navigate through their own journey.
The foundation’s work is especially prominent during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. During this time, to educate the public and rally support for the cause, TRF intensifies its efforts with state and national advocacy, awareness drives, social media campaigns, community outreach, and special events. The 2024 Rise Up Gala is scheduled for September 20, 2024, at Wynn Las Vegas and will feature Imagine Dragons performing live. In addition, the gala will be hosted by Joel McHale as the master of ceremonies, with Aisha Tyler serving as the co-host. Guests will also hear powerful testimonials from TRF families. The highlight of the gala each year is when the band invites children on stage to dance and sing with them, an experience that leaves a lasting impact on everyone involved.
In true form, every year in connection with the Rise Up Gala, Imagine Dragons will host a private special activity for the families in attendance, such as a sing-along, a milk and cookies social, or a family barbeque dinner. These moments provide a much-needed break from the daily challenges of cancer treatments and create cherished memories for the entire family.
As TRF prepares for its annual gala next month, the local community is encouraged to participate. Jennifer invites everyone to contribute, saying, "Your support can make a world of difference to families navigating the toughest battle of their lives. Whether through donations, sponsorships, or volunteering for our TRF Ambassador Program, every contribution helps build a stronger family together. Together, we can bring hope, joy, and strength to those who need it most.”
Through their music, their foundation, and their genuine care, Imagine Dragons continues to inspire and uplift, ensuring that families facing pediatric cancer do not have to navigate their struggles alone. Imagine Dragons' commitment to TRF embodies this world-famous local group’s dedication to community spirit and to making a tangible difference in the lives of pediatric cancer families, reinforcing that they are more than a band—they are a lifeline to many.
