What ultimately drew Dr. David Jarquin to chiropractic was an injury he sustained while snowboarding. He tore his MCL, and the orthopedic surgeon had recommended surgery and told him he would be sidelined for 6 months. Not wanting to sit out from soccer, he looked for alternatives, and a teammate recommended his chiropractor. After 3 months of chiropractic and sports rehab, he was back on the field playing.
Independence Chiropractic sees patients of all demographics, backgrounds, and levels of activity but has a special connection with student athletes. Dr Jarquin played soccer competitively through college and, up until recently, recreationally. While he acknowledges that chiropractic is not the solution to every injury, he believes that all too often, drugs and surgery are the first recommendation that an athlete, or anybody, receives. He wants to be able to give people an alternative solution that does not come at the cost of unwanted side effects. At Independence Chiropractic, he helps treat many sports related injuries from bumps and bruises to more serious injuries like sprains and strains. They also co-treat severe injuries such as fractures and tears with the appropriate physicians. Dr Jarquin points out that “our bodies are meant to heal and regenerate… If our nervous system is hindered then our ability to heal and recuperate is also diminished. As a faith based office, I understand that healing comes from above, down and inside out. My role as a chiropractor is to remove the interference that slows that healing.”
In their office, they address the underlying cause of aches and pains. Before pain, your body has already begun to experience a decrease in functionality, which could be decreased range of motion, decreased muscle responsiveness, or decreased neurological sensitivity which are all key factors in athletic performance. Student athletes are particularly vulnerable because their bones and nervous system are still not fully formed, and they are putting an increased stress on their bodies. As their musculoskeletal and nervous system mature, chiropractic care can keep up with the constant stress and trauma associated with sports by correcting any imbalances as they develop. Research has shown chiropractic care can increase athletic performance with the added benefit of injury prevention. At a basic level chiropractic addresses improper motion in joints which affect overall biomechanics. Poor biomechanics leads to instability and dysfunctions which could then lead to an increased chance of injuries and a decrease in athletic performance.
When it comes to athletes, chiropractic is not always about healing injuries, oftentimes it's about gaining a competitive advantage over your opponent. Athletes are always looking for that "edge" over their opponents. If you can increase your vertical, increase your acceleration, or increase your reaction time, it could be the difference between scoring a touchdown, stealing a base, or winning the game.
