Insiders Guide: Steak 48

A mainstay of Houston's culinary scene, River Oaks District's Steak 48 continually brings the flavor.

As Houstonians, we are a spoiled bunch. We take for granted all the fine dining establishments at our fingertips – sometimes, the most challenging part of an evening is deciding where to go. One restaurant, however, makes it easy. Glitzy Steak 48, a regular on every top ten list, delivers delicious food, outstanding service, and the glamourous atmosphere River Oaks District is known for.

The ever-popular restaurant debuted on Houston’s dining scene in 2016, and it has been packed ever since. Based on Jeffery and Michael Masto’s Phoenix restaurant Steak 44, the restaurant features prime-grade steaks and fresh seafood. The restaurant has a robust menu of appetizers, delicious side dishes, and seafood offerings – you don’t even have to love red meat to enjoy a great meal. Their expansive raw bar and private dining areas make the steak house perfect for any occasion.

Part of the appeal that permeates everything at Steak 48 – the moody lighting, the large bar, the open kitchen – is the menu’s connection to sustainability and fresh ingredients. The restaurant’s Wagyu is sourced from Snake River Farms who have found an innovative way to make America’s finest Wagyu while capturing methane, creating organic fertilizer out of their cattle’s waste, and reducing wastewater. Steak 48 also prioritizes freshness is always first on the scene with in-season and sustainably sourced seafood. Each dish showcases the natural flavors and lets each ingredient speak for itself.  The restaurant also boasts an on-site butcher to ensure that every steak is cut by hand and delivered directly to the kitchen.

Known for its expansive menu, executive chef Jeff Taylor keeps everything the same while constantly innovating. He has a deft hand at adding seasonal tweaks to showcase the dish’s flavors. Taylor also keeps regional flavors top of mind when adding to the menu. His most recent addition Sweet Potato Praline combines the mild flavor of sweet potato with a Texas favorite, praline.

The beverage program at Steak 48 is just as impressive as its dining menu. The innovative cocktail program features modern cocktails with their signature shakers. The restaurant is best known for its martini program, which features four flavors of the classic cocktail – the pomegranate blood orange martini should not be missed. Featuring one of the most opulent wine by the glass offerings, connoisseurs will love their generous 12-ounce pours and their 3,000-bottle wine library.
